AK in shtf, which round? 7.62x39 or 5.45x39?
« on: August 22, 2012, 06:10:11 PM »
So your in a shtf situation, you have the choice between an AK47 in 7.62x39 or AK74 in 5.45x39. Amount of ammunition is the same. Which do you pick and why? Discuss....

7.62X39 stopping power don't have to worry so much about a ricksha due to the low velocity, ability to penetrate through objects with ease.

I wouldn't feel defenseless with either.  The 5.45 x 39mm is what the 5.56 should have been.  I prefer the 7.62 x 39 for going through car doors, medium trees and cover, etc.

My guess would be 5.45 because for one, its really cheaper, and its got a flat trajectory, when you compare it to the 7.62.  Just my opinion, bro.  Plus, if the Russians invade, they'll be using the 5.45, so you can just pick that crap up off the ground, and you've got all the ammo you could ever need right on the ground.  Just pick it up.  Homefront Defense doesn't care, though, because we'll build you a custom 47 or a custom 74 and it will kick ass either way.     [img]http://www.smileydesign.n

Crested, this thread is about AK's and its not about M4's, M16's, or AR15's.  Keep it on topic man.  If you want to start your own thread on 5.56x45, please feel free to do so.   [url=http://yoursmiles.org/p-m

in all seriousness, I REALLY REALLY want to own an AK and a stockpile of 7.62 (not 5.45, so there's my answer to the OP), but money won't allow it right now.

Russian trash and awkward magazine changes.

If I HAD to decide between whitch Communist crap I would use I would go with 7.62x39 for penetration and availibility. And there are probably more 47 parts and magazines out there.

I get the reasons for 7.62, but the flatter, longer range 5.45 is pretty appealing too. Doesn't the 7.62 round start to really drop at 200 yards?

Anything past 200 yards is just pot shots no matter what rifle you're using.

Then call me pot shotter lol...
200 yards isnt that far at all. shooting a rifle at 200 is like shooting a pistol at 25 yards.

Well i'd say 7.62 because of popularity. I haven't seen many 5.45 casings at gun ranges around here.  however 5.45 has been on the rise for awhile now. Really it comes down to whats popular in your area and what your terrain is like. 7.62 for urban and dense woods and 5.45 for more open areas.

I have somewhere in the area of 12k 5.45 ammo, it's lighter, more accurate, has a much further effective range, and it's superior lethality is undisputed among those who have actually shot people with both calibers. (Provided we are talking FMJs and not soft or hollow point)

If ammo availability is a concern, a 5.56 ak is the way to go, although mags are the most difficult to get.
It's better to have it and not need it ...

Yes, I know of that pain personally.  You'd think some after-market manufacturer would tool up for some .223/5.56 Norinco style AK mags and corner the market...but they won't.  I even contacted some manufacturers about this but they won't even respond.  Heck, I'd even settle for some polymer mags....but NOOOO!

Ballistically the 5.45 is the combloc 5.56, 7.62x39 is over priced these days!!! For everyone that thinks they have to stock up on ammo because it will never be available again and has to have a ton or firearms  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at PM me and I will give you a great deal on what you need. For everyone else buy an ak 74 and a case of 5.45 and you will be all set for what you need it for!

I'm having a hard time finding metal 5.54 mags for a price anywhere close to 7.62 mags.  I don't want any plastic mags.  Is there something I'm missing.  The mag price alone is enough to turn me off from the 5.54.

Composit mags are just about all you will find for the 74 the surplus mags from what i have heard do very well. I got into ak's when the 74's were un heard of and X39 was 60 bucks a case (1000 rounds) for wolf. If I IMHO were going into the platform today I would go 74 based off of ammo cost alone. I hear the bulgy circle 10 mags are the way to go not sure on prices but i do know they have come down in recent years. On a side note to builders the bolt on a 74 kit will work with 5.56, 74 mags will work with 5.56 too from my understanding and there are 5.56 barrels for these kits. Again just from my understanding havent built one so I cant say for sure. But for me running and building ak's i would go AK74 at todays prices. I talk some shit about the .30 round but at the end of the day how much penetration do you really need (you not your lady)? And the combloc replaced the X39 for a reason, if it was a great round they would have replaced the rifle not the round. Again I rock AKM's but I got into them when they, the ammo, and the parts were cheap. Hope it helped you decide [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
