Not to bust EJ's bubble (and I don't mean to play the bitch card) but I AM one of those people who have been IN COMBAT with the 5.56 and the AR platform.  Totally unimpressed.  Accuracy supberb, but not enough barrier penetration.  It's sooo frustrating when you know exactly what barrier the bad guy is behind and you can't get him and he keeps you pinned with his 7.62 x 39.  It's a whole world of shit and frustration.

Not to burst your bubble or anything, but we haven't even gotten into barrier penetration, we were talking terminal ballistics.  Everyone knows 7.62 owns in that category.  Get you a 308 and you're good to go.

Sry bout that. Postin from a nook. To finish though. The question is what are you most comfortable and capable of getting yer hands on to begin a wrol situation with?

Yep, because of ammo, and other things, such as being able to find replacement parts, ect, you'll most likely be switching to which ever weapon is most prevalent in the area.  I agree, pick a platform and train with it all that you can.  That's a good enough start for anybody.

A bullet will fragment when its shot into dirt?  No!  Say it ain't so!  LOL

That's cute. If it fragments in packed eath it will sure as hell fragment in squishy human tissue, which you earlier disagreed with.

It 'owns' relative to a .223. A .45/70 owns relative to a .308 but you don't need that much power to efficiently kill a man. EJR, I would recomend going on AR15 and reading up on some of the ballistic and bullet information. They have a huge section and it is very informative.

Although a respectable argument to have about these calibers i think its safe to say what gun is in anyones hands on this forum it wont be our limiting factor. We all have plenty of room to improve in our own abilities that will make much more of a difference then what size projectile flys out of our guns at what velocity.

Which is true with the .45 acp bullets I dig out. But 5.56 fragments. I'll youtube it if I'm pushed far enough.

Well said ken. I think training and skill are the real deciding factors.
It dosnt matter what yer shooting if you cant hit the broad side of a barn. Or identify and access targets and threats.

Which is absolutely true Whiskeyjack. Skill far outweighs engineering when it comes to shooting another man before he shoots you. But let's not assume that ballistic theory is meaningless. It's about the blend of real world practical skill, and the knowledge of your weapons capabilities, expectations, and limitations.
