Getting a new gun. need advice.
« on: May 13, 2013, 10:47:03 AM »
Here are the candidates.

DPMS LR-308 (24" stainless bull barrell)
VEPR 7.62x54r (20" or 23")

however im also tossing around the idea of getting an AR-15.
Thinking about either a Colt 6920, Sig M400, or Ruger SR556.

what do you guys think?
Any advice?

Budget is $1,200 btw

Between the DPMS and the VEPR I'd go with the DPMS personally. Ammo availability, twist ratio, ability to customize all come to mind. As far as the AR's  :-\ There's nothing really great other than appearance that stands out on the rifles. I've heard good things about all of them even though my bias leans towards Sig. If I had the money personally I'd swing for the DPMS. I think Nutnfancy  ::) has a few videos specifically about this gun and variants on his channel. For the price I doubt you'll beat it.

What role is future rifle to be used in? Or just a fun gun? 54r is still cheapest rifle round to shoot.

I also found a rock river LAR-8 for the same price as the DPMS, uses FAL mags too.
20" barrel flat top. w/forward assist and dust cover

DM-ish gun.
Would like something that can reach out with some authority but could be utilized as a rifleman's weapon if need be.

although TG almost has me convinced i need an AR.... again.  :))

What optic will you put on the rifle? No point in a longer range caliber if you dont have the quality glass to utilize it. Factorin some bucks for that.

I have an AK that is shooting 200 yards with irons. Will go through conder block as well.
Get it dirty still shoots, get her wet (she like that) still shoots, no oil still shoots.
Run over by a truck.........still shoots.
AR. thats a high dollar stripper ......... [url=http://yoursmiles.org/p-m

yeah but what about at long range? I think the points the 300+ potential. Any hunkajunk shoots 200 yards. My 10-22 is probably comparable in accuracy to an AK at 200 yards.

This, before I would consider either of these do you have a rifle that can be used in the CQB-mid range roles? Do you have a good defensive pistol and do you have spares of those?

I am very practical in my gun choices

I think he made the decision that he needed a longer range weapon. We really need not micro manage that choice. Not trying to be confrontational. Just saying we dont need to audit every guys inventory when they are set on a certain whatever.

Currahee my primary is a Norinco MAK-90 922(r) compliant, with peep sights.
My secondary is an M&P shield .40

I decided on the RPK as a *slightly* longer range/support option. The compatibility with my primary's mags and ammo helped the decision along.

Plus RPK's are boss.

Hey RS, does the Norinco have that funky thumbhole stock? Can it take standard AK mags, thought they did, but don't remember the details on these anymore. Very underrated AK variant. Of course, they are not that widely available either. Good choice in the end, pictures a must please!

will post pics as soon as i pick her up tomorrow night.
It has the uber gay thumbhole stock but uses regular stamped AK furniture and magazines.

Will be doing a black synthetic club-foot RPK stock, arsenal black lower handguards, Mako pistol grip, ultimak rail and Vortex SPARC co-witnessed with irons. Thats the plan anyway.

40rd mags. NO DRUMS. lol

Good to see this story has a happy ending!

BTW Currahee is right on the money, if we are to shepherd our brothers into making good choices then we must be willing to ask them the hard questions like, "hey dude, are you fucking up?"

two things

1. you aint gonna chew up a cinderblock wall in a gunfight unless you got a m2 or a m240b

2. pretty much any gun can be turned into a damn fine precision weapon but without proper glass your wasting your time

I've been around the block myself and would still prefer to have others ask me the "hard questions." There is no one I would not try to give my best advice to, especially when they asked for it.

Anyway I'm glad to see the OP made a sound logistical and tactical choice.
We need pics... and I would also like to see the differenice in accuracy between a well shot AK and bipoded AK.  I'm curious.

Yeah i know your not a newbie currahee. I just put myself in RS' shoes and it gets old repeating the same old answers everytime you need advice on a specific item. Yes i wiped my ass today. Yes i brushed my teeth. Now about this gun... Another exampke. If TG said his truck wont start. I wouldnt start by asking if theres gas in it. I see both sides though.

Well friends i may have gone full retard.
Didnt get the RPK.

This morning a friend posted his 6.8SPC AR for $900 couldn't pass her up.

-RedX upper with 20" stainless fluted barrel
-BEAR lower with magpul ACS
-Bushnell trophy 4-12x40 illuminated w/BDC

Although when he duracoated it he painted the barrel under the handguards so i'll have to strip that off.
I will probably duracoat the lower to match soon, i do like FDE.

Now i just gotta start stocking up ammo for it.
Also i get 50% off trijicon stuff so i might put my first ACOG on her, definitely replacing the bushnell.
