Multi retical sights

O/K here's a bunch of questions
Are multi retical sights practical or worth the money over scopes for 50 to 100 yards?
How long does lithium batteries last and can they be charged up or do you relpace them?

Hey JOJO just to let you know what i am about to say is my opinion you should do your resurch and do what you think is bets for you. this is the system that works for me so.

1. Multi retical sights. I am not a fan. optics on a weapon system needs to be solid. a mil red dot to me is solid for engagements in 100 or less meters. with red not appearing in nature unless you are fighting in a friekin red brick city or flower field. the red dot will silhouette its self on target. I would be more concern about getting an optic that has a  enclosed casing such as an Aim-point or EoTech. (take your pick) but a cheep optic where the red dot can be washed broken lose zero or be taken out due to the elements hitting and covering up the projector such as on a Reflex Sight, in my opinion will especially when you need it will fail you.  if you are going to put an optic on a fighting rifle it needs to be something that can take a lot of shit hold Zero have a long battery life NVG compatible (its nice to always have options)  and stay rock steady when life has a shit quake.

2. How long does lithium batteries last and can they be charged up or do you relpace them? not sure dude hopefully someone here can answer that?

I agree with all that Swampfox wrote on a multi retical sight.

I own a EoTech here and I am so glad I saved up the money to buy one for these two reasons:

1) Was walking across a log I had previously downed over a creek at the redoubt. I slipped and fell to my wet peril. My AR took a beating as can be seen by some of the love marks left from the tumble. Drained the water from the receiver and barrel. Then shot the weapon to see how off the EoTech was. Guess what? It was spot on!

2) When at MVT camp we were doing a buddy advance maneuver when in mid battle my Eotech fell off and hit da' ground. Finished the set using my A.R.M.S. L40 pop-up rear sight. No fuss/ no muss. Once the maneuver was over I put the sight back on, matching up my witness marks and took a few shots to see how much it was off. 1" high and a tad to the left at 50 yards. Left it unchanged as I was still in the "kill zone." Word of caution...Blue Loctite your sights on and if you can, have a wire attached to your hydrographic sight too.

On another topic: I never really realized how beneficial the Hydrographic sight was vs. irons till mine fell off as written above. Did my cowitnessed sights work YUP! But target acquisition was slower. Maybe a half a second slower but in battle seconds and half seconds could be the difference between life and death. For me or my buddy partner.

Aimpoint, Eotech or Trijicon hydrographic encased sights are some great sights for your weapon. Save the extra money to buy something that will save you or your battle partners life.

I agree with the previous posts.  If you are concerned with multi reticle optics because of different ranges there are plenty of other good quality options. For a RDS or unmagnified Optic brands like Aimpoint, EOtech, Trijicon are the gold standard and Vortex is another great option.  If you want something that can help you reach out a bit with some magnification then there are a number of good variable power scopes. I like Leupold MK6 CMRs on my mid range ARs and SCAR17 ( I just got to try a Trijicon VCOG and am liking it). There are many good 1-4x or 1-5x scopes that will not break your bank. Leuplold VXR Patrol and Vortex Viper  are a couple.  These have some form of a ranging reticle as well as a red dot in the center for quicker short range (unmagnified) work.

I do not beleive in "budget" optics.  Knowing that your optic will hold up and just plain always work is as important as a reliable rifle to put it on.  I am not saying to just buy Nightforce or US Optics or Leupold MK6 or MK8, but even if you need to save a little and wait a month or two before buying the optic then it is worth doing. Leupold makes some good quality affordable stuff particularly in their Mark AR line and VXR line. Vortex is a company that makes very very good optics and a much more comfortable price point.

Your battery life question doesnt have an easy answer.  It really depends on the optic the battery is in and the type (AA, AAA, CR123). Some lithiums can be recharged which can be a $$ saver.
