I am more interested in frog lube as a surface Protectant than a lube as I have blued guns.

But wd40 isn't a good lube. Neither is suck @$$ rem oil. CLP is the only decent lube I've found other than Vaseline.

First off wd40 isnt a gun lube specific product so thats out of our conversation. not saying some non gun specific oils wont work great but if one sucks it means nothing. pinapple juice is a terrible gun lube too.

Next what happened with these lesser oils that caused you to deem them unworthy of your guns?

I hate rem oil because after cycling my AR bolt 3 times it mysteriously evaporates.

My weapon runs fine without any lube at all. Rem Oil somehow dissappears after a few manual cycles of the bolt or if it gets shot and heats up.

Well there you go.

Your need to see excess oil is a personal preferance that dosent really reflect the ability of the oil to do its job. Have you experienced any additional issues with guns when using Rem oil? If the answer is yes, In my opinion thats a gun issue. A gun that is so picky that it requires a specific lubrication brand to function is in my mind a defect in that firearm. Now perhaps some oils will hold up better then others to extended use but if my guns wont run clean and dry at the least then im not happy. In my opinion oil just extends the life of the parts, but shouldnt be required for proper function of the firearm.

Perhaps thats not realistic for an AR for example, i dont know ive never owned one. But if i was going to trust an AR it better run perfect, bone dry. Battle weapons shouldnt NEED oil to work.

I agree. Not all gun oil is created equal. I would HEAVILY coat my AR bolt carrier in Rem oil right before shooting it. After about 3 mags the bolt is bone dry. When I use CLP the bolt is still wet.

For the record WD-40 is not lube  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

It is Water Displacement formula 40. The whole goal was to prevent rust by driving out water.

Besides that who's AR won't run without lube?

I know who's AK won't run without it.... [url=http://yoursmiles.org/p-m

@Grudgie
All that metal and no Frog Lube in sight...tsk, tsk, tsk.

lol i get so much shit from the guys in my squad for my love of the frog lube and detest of the CLP.

meh... CLP aint so bad. it certainly isn't the latest and greatest stuff on the market, but detest? nahh. I use the stuff from time to time out of laziness. as with any "all-in-one" product, you sacrifice a little quality and functionality for convenience. six one way, half-dozen the other.

you ever use the gov issue CLP? its not the black bottle civilian stuff, this shit sucks, imo. and fucks your hands up with to much use, like cleaning saws and 240s...

Good for you Grudgie, the M1 Garand is one of the finest rifles ever issued.

Try to stay away from heavy bullets loaded with slow burning powder. 150gr is right where you want to be.

You'll also want to make sure you keep that gas tube painted. They were all stainless steel and they would shine like a diamond. I recommend scuff sanding the tube with a piece of single 0 steel wool and flat black 'header paint.' It is rated to 2200 degrees and should last.

Another thing to think about it the history of the rifle. If it's got no history or mis-matched parts you might want to think about rechambering it for 308.

Is that possible? if the shorter case still functions in the rifle thatd be pretty sweet to have an m1 garand in .308

Thanks for the tips. It is a mix matched parts gun but it still has historical value to me. .30-06 is a common enough round for SHTF so I will keep it the way it is. There is just something distinctly American about the .30-06.

I bought some snap caps and practiced reloading and I am in love with her. It is fast! I love the rugged and simplistic feeding mechanism. And the iron sights come to your eye so natrually and quickly compared with the AR iron sights in whitch you place your head forward at an awkward position and place your nose up agianst the charging handle. These Garand sights will be near as good as a red dot with some practice.

And I couldn't really believe the gas tube was made out of stainless steel when I heard it. I always thought  stainless steel was a newish invention.

I'll be damned if crappy weather was going to stop me from going to the range for a function check on this finally (got this in the spring). FUN FUN FUN!!!

Yugoslavian m57, based on the Soviet TT33. This version has a slightly longer grip (good for my big hands), for 9+1 rounds. And this 7.62x25 cartridge? Nice and powerful, kinda a pocket AK. Went through nearly a 100 round bag of surplus Bulgarian before the rain called it quits. Not the most accurate ammo, besides some split necks, but generally was able to put rounds on target consistently. Able to reach out well past 25 yards if I do my part. Nice solid old gun and ran like a champ. Had two original magazines that came with the gun and two new-made mags made by Zastava, the factory who built the gun originally back in the late 1950's. Will make a GREAT shtf/out in the heavy woods gun. Going to get some Wolf hp's to try.

Anyone that wants to do that and doesn't have the spare retainers, go on ebay and get some shock cord.  Stuff works great and having 100 feet has lasted me a LONG time lol.  I still have a lot and have done A LOT with the stuff!
