Measles Cases Continue to Soar, Stirring Concern Over Long-Term Effects
Research shows immune system could be left in a temporary state of amnesia

The number of new U.S. measles cases continued to accelerate last week as health authorities race to curb the outbreaks and scientists who study the virus say measles may be more harmful than once believed.

There have been 555 cases of measles in 20 states across the U.S. this year as of April 11, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday, 90 more than were reported the previous week.

The increase in cases means 2019 could soon become the worst for measles in the U.S. since the disease was officially eliminated—meaning that it stopped circulating continuously—in 2000. In 2014, the worst year since elimination, 667 cases were reported.

The U.S. outbreaks this year are among the latest to emerge in developed countries, where high overall vaccination rates and access to health care make death from measles uncommon. Measles complications and deaths are a greater threat in poorer regions of the world, where inadequate nutrition and greater exposure to other infections can make it harder to fight off effects of measles.

Measles Cases Reaching Highest Number In Decades, New Research Finds

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Measles cases are approaching numbers the United States hasn’t seen in 20 years. The number of measles cases in the United States is approaching the record, with 70 new cases reported, for the decade in a four-month time span, according to new data released Monday.

Pediatrician Dr. Jeffery Avner is on the front lines of a measles outbreak that is showing no signs of slowing down.

“When you see a disease that is preventable with a vaccination, it is somewhat disheartening,” said Avner, the Chair of Pediatrics at Maimonides Children’s Hospital of Brooklyn.

His hospital in Brooklyn has treated nine cases of measles so far, including an adult and a child who ended up in the intensive care unit.

‘Parents don’t really understand risks of measles because it’s become such a rare disease, but measles does have very serious complications. One in 20 children with measles get pneumonia, which by the way, is the most common cause of death,” Avner said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now reporting 626 cases of the highly contagious virus in 22 states, including New Jersey and Delaware.

It’s the second-highest number of cases reported since measles was declared eliminated in 2000.

Most of the New York cases have occurred in unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities.

Doctors across the country are also fighting against the anti-vaccine movement among some parents.

“They are getting information from sources that are incorrect, that are trying to sell them on ideas and studies that were fraudulent and debunked,” Avner explained.

Avner says if people stay unvaccinated, the measles could continue to spread.

Some experts are concerned with Passover this week there will be an increase in measles cases after the holiday in the coming weeks.

I had measles when I was a young lad along with Chicken pox. Forget which disease but my Mom went and hung towels over all of the mirrors because every time I looked at myself I freaked out. LOL.

If my memory serves me correctly, my doctor put a notice on our front door warning folks who came to the house that a person in the house had measles or chicken pox.

Writing off the cuff, I would say that a by-product of the aliens crossing our southern border is some supposedly eradicated diseases. 

My question to much more educated folks than I on this subject; since I had measles, fifty-six years ago, do I need to get inoculated?

You are probably ok, but ask your doc.  Back in 1986 I was going up from local community college to 4 year and they required MMR certification.  I had the disease 20 years prior but no papers on it.  Visited family doc and he squirted some juice in my mouth and thats the new MMR vaccine.  It cost about $3 back then, so probably $15 now.

But worth it IMHO.

Which is weird because I’m pretty sure I got it in November. But oh well.
