gun or knife...?
« on: April 21, 2012, 01:13:41 AM »
this should be interesting...

ok, regardless of whatever other gear you have... you have to pick one or the other... gun or knife.

doesn't matter what gun, or what knife.

I'm not talking ONLY for defense, I mean for general purpose.

go.

Gun

I know I could probably survive longer with the knife, but there are quite a bit of pieces parts that I can use off of a firearm if I run out of ammo.

Knife.

You can do a lot more with a knife from starting fires to gathering dinner.

knife without question. a knife is the most important tool you will carry. a knife can make all other survival tools. the knife can make you fire by making a bow and drill set, it can build you shelter, it can make you a container for water, it can make you cordage, it can get you food by making cordage for snares or making a throwing stick or bow and arrow. the knife does all... the gun cant do much very well. theoretically you could take the gun and turn it into a knife but that would be a lot of work in nature and would be a very poor knife why not just start with the knife in the first place.

Shoulda made this a poll question.  Personally if you have one, you should have the other at all times.  If it was an "OH SNAP!" situation and only one was available I would say I would prefer to have the knife in MOST circumstances.  Even in some situations if you need a gun, a knife could get you one.  :))

yea it's just a hypothetical.. for *whatever reason* you can only have one of the other. I think I'd go with knife as well but it's pretty painful thinking about not having a gun lol. but a knife is more important for general all-around survival. and yes a knife can get you a gun. lol

have you guys ever heard the saying. " Never bring a knife to a gun fight? "

A gun can get me a knife...at a safer distance.  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

I agree, using a gun to get a knife is way easier than using a knife to get a gun, but what lows would you have to stoop to to accomplish that? then again, I guess the same could be said for the other scenario as well.

also consider that you may be stuck overnight, or for several nights, before you can acquire that knife (through whatever wolf-ish ways). a gun is for protection, but a knife is for everything else.

also, that old saying "never bring a knife to a gun fight" kind of assumes that the knife-wielder is standing face to face with a gun-wielder. the outcome is easily predictable. but if you ARE bringing a knife to a gun fight, you're most likely going to make damn sure you have the element of surprise...
just food for thought.

Carry both everywhere you go.  Use each as needed.  There is never a reason why you would not be carrying both.  Unless you are entering a Federally controlled space.  Even then they shouldn't be any farther away than your car.

I really can't answer this question because it depends on too many things. such as:

are you in the city, suburbs, low populated area, or the woods
who's coming after you potentially or are you just surviving somewhere.
can you get one or the other later
what are the psychical obstacles you'll face (terrain, doors, walls)
quick and stealthy/ slow and visible

90% of the time i would like to have a gun. I much rather have a gun and a bag of tools with a haligen bar and a ax thrown into the mix.
hell, I'd take just the bag of tools if I had the ax or the haligen bar in it. You can do alot more with tools then you can a gun or a knife.

That old saying assumes the knife wielder will be a few yards away from the gun wielder.

Too close - dont underestimate the knife

Sweet vid.

Not changing the fact that I would take my firearm over a knife.

I'm not a cop, I don't have to be that close to you. I don't have to investigate what your doing. I can engage you at what ever distance I see fit. Especially if I have the dime.

Yep, that's the good thing of living in suburban/remote areas, people have their own space, so you can recognize danger when someone is trying to get close.

In the city you have people really close constantly, is extremely probable any menace you encounter will be in close distance and you wont have time even to draw.

Thank god I left the city, it fucking sucks.

I don't know about your county seat however, I have gone to the state house on several occasions here in RI and just make a quick right before the metal detectors to a window that I turn in my handgun and knife. They take both, put in a plastic tray, give me a claim ticket and I "assume" lock away till I return with my claim ticket.

Similar in PA. When I had to go to the county courthouse to post my father in laws will; Upon entering the front door (s) I was confronted with a metal detector. I asked the guard where I could leave my weapons and he pointed over to a gal sitting behind a desk. Again I put my handgun and knife into a plastic tray and she put the tray into a post office type cubby; locked the cubby and gave me the key. Nobody gave me a second glance.

It would be interesting to hear what kind of situation ya' got down in FL Sledge however I suspect it would be similar.

i always figured even entering a courthouse with a knife would be problems so i always leave mine in the car. id be interested to see what the gaurd would say if i asked where i could keep my knife before i walked through the metal detector.

I'd make a dry run first just in case they give you trouble. go in there with nothing and just ask the question. of course, it's up to you, but if it were me I'd err on the side of caution.
