Have You Ever Considered A Survival Boat?
« on: April 19, 2012, 09:13:24 AM »
This is an interesting little read.  I remember when this was being talked about and then discounted in the late '60's.  I guess there was more research done later.  It's funny that in addition to the Bible, all ancient cultures have their own version of this story.

http://beforeitsnews.com/story/2044/569/Shocking_Discovery:_Noahs_Ark_Found.html

I guess some people are taking the story of the ark as a survival method very seriously.  20 million dollars each worth of seriously.

In the right location, it could work, but I would want a really fast boat to outrun any attackers or raiders.

I always wanted to build a sailboat, and with all the lakes and water ways around here it could be a very viable bug out option in certain situations. Unless you have vast quantities of fuel stored up you're going to have to go the sail route... Sorry EJR.

All the fuel that you would ever need are in the hulls of other boats, of course, eventually that fuel will go bad.  You could still go with biodiesel, but that would mean you have to come to shore sometimes, unless you do something with algae or something.

I'm not an expert on it, but there is probably a way.  I think I would always want a sail boat anyway, as a back up.  There will probably be plenty of them just sitting there for the taking, depending on what happens.

Hey my sailboat is for sale: http://bluewaterboats.org/baba-30/

My wife and I have owned her since 1986 and lived on her till 1997. From Seattle to LA on the west coast and from Annapolis to Ft Pierce FL on the east coast.

She is a movable, self sufficient , BOL.   :))

what sucks about being on a boat in the ocean is if another boat wants to fuck with you they can easily do serious damage to you just by shooting randomly at the hull. being on a boat is like your entire team is standing in the funnel of death 24/7.

Yes Ken you are right. Or you can hit something bigger then you and poke a hole in the hull too.

I was bringing a sailboat back from Hawaii when at the darkest part of the night our sailboat hit something. I was off watch and sprang from my bunk and ran on deck.

We had been traveling at about 7 knots but had almost stopped dead in the water!

The two crew members on watch were shinning at something big aft of us. So I followed the flash light beam to a big ass COUCH!

Yup you got it a freaken couch. Just think what would have happened if it was a container?????

Having a boat as a BOV and as a BOL is diffucult but possible you need some serious experience out at sea not for months but for years, you need to learn how to maintain it, you need fuel or some kind of propullsion, you need some serious security, and you always have to be careful when going out in terrible weather, and if the worse comes you need a Plan B. Just a little info if people are considering it. However in my opinion with the equipment and experience I would do it I think it sounds cool  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co.

TG, the boat going 20 Knots (Speed) or wind at 20 Knots?

I have never hit 20 Knots on a sailboat but I have hit 17 knots with a spinnaker up and before the wind.  :)

On my boat when the wind hits a steady 20 knots or so I throw a reef in the main and take the headsail (Yankee) in a wrap or two using the roller furling and leave the stay sail up. This takes enough preasure off the sails so we maintain a less then 20 degree heel.

When the wind is up around 28 knots I will roller furl in the headsail until, again I am at a 20 degree or less heel.

Once, my wife and I cross the Straight of Juan de Fuca (Nick named by my wife the Straight of Juan de PUKE-A) going south from Friday Harbor, WA. heading to Port Townsend, WA. It was blowing 35 or so out of the west and I had two reefs in th main and only the stay sail up forward of the mast. We were hitting 7 knots in a 30' boat. About 2/3's of the way across I shook out the second reef and went to just one as I was in the lee of some tall bluffs.

That was a wild ride as the straight is rather shallow. My wife and our cat hung out below alternating throwing up into paper bags while I sat in the cockpit eating corn beef sandwiches and drinking beer; enjoying every minute of the ride.  :)) :)) :))

It said in the link you provided that your boat would hit 20 knots on a reach. I'm from New Mexico so most sailing gargon goes right past me I know what "on a reach" means.

I was just wondering if you had pushed her that hard. I imagine it would be epic! 20 knots is blistering.

Got it TG.

It is not possible (Physics) to make a 30' sailboat go 20 knts, on a reach or not. Maybe a 30' catamaran but not a modified full keel mono hull.

That said she is a fine looking boat. I only wish there was enough water here to float such a fine arrangement of plywood.

P.L.Y.W.O.O.D???? Sorry man: 3/4" fiberglass hull and teak! No freaken PLYWOOD in that boat.  :))

Funny story about old Mad Max: My wife and I flew to the orient in October '04. Before I went I made arrangements for the local boatyard to come by and tug it over to the yard to be pulled for the winter before we left.

Upon returning I looked out the window and saw that she was gone and my mooring had been put on a winter stick. All looking correct and right with the world after being gone for 3 weeks.

A couple days later my neighbor asked me, "what was the damage?" I asked him what he was talking about and he told me the story of old Mad Max.

Apparently a Nor'easter had blown through during our trip and she broke the mooring. She ended up on a rock jevy just south of us and was rescued by my boat yard.

As soon as I heard the story I ran over to my boatyard and was told the story. Bottom-line, the yard owner told me if it wasn't a Baba 30 it would have broken up and the parts would have washed out to sea. He explained that he and my next door neighbor had a meeting and decided that I couldn't do anything half around the world so they decided not to call me.

The insurance claim was only $18K and over the winter the boat yard made her pretty again. :-)

Plywood...What are you thinking!!!!
