Do you put things away to donate?

Overlooked SHTF Barter Item

Quote

Overlooked SHTF Barter Item:

From Tess Pennington at ReadyNutrition.com: ?It is safe to say that America is in a full fledged depressionary period and as the people are starting to feel the effects of the economic dead fall, they will look for alternate ways of obtaining products. We are in a bartering economy.? Pennington adds that in a SHTF scenario, bartering goods or services will be more valuable than the paper dollar. Having extra supplies of these items could be used for bartering and trading:
?Baby Formula and Cloth Diapers? In a bad situation, Mama Bears will do just about anything to take care of their cubs.
?Micro Livestock?Chickens, ducks, pygmy goats and rabbits can provide food and manure for farming.
?Weapons?Having extra weapons and accouterments that go along with weapons will be one of the top bartering items. Items such as: knives, hunting knives (heavy bladed knives for hunting), ammunition and guns. When purchasing extra bullets and guns, stick with the most popular models.
?Mason Jars? Many people, especially in the city, no longer preserve foods. They will need canning jars.
?First Aid Kits?First aid supplies, such as suturing needles, thread, saline solution, gauze and celox will be in high demand.
?Vitamins? If a person becomes vitamin deficient, ailments such as scurvy will become prevalent.
?Tools?Pick axes, hand saws, shovels, hammers, wrenches, and screw drivers.
?Fire Starting Gear?Stock up on lighters, waterproof matches, flints, etc.
?Honey and Sugar? Not necessities, but they would be popular trade items.
?Vegetable Oil?Use it for cooking and combine oil and herbs to make flavored oils.
?Gasoline?People will need gas and lots of it.
?Fishing Supplies?Hooks, line and lures do not take up much space in a bag.
?Boots?Military grade boots that have flexible soles and deep tread are the best type of shoes to have.
?Coffee and Tea?Simple indulgences that many of us can?t live without.
?Liquor?Liquor can be made from almost anything: fruit, cactus, potatoes, rice, even honey.
?Cigarettes and Tobacco? Many cannot kick the tobacco habit.

MN is right on - with those dies and some scavenged wheel weights he'd be in business.  Different types of primers and powder could be added to that list as well.

Learning how to make your own wine, beer, and spirits is the best trade skill you can have.
No matter how bad shit gets that's one skill that will always be needed.

Plus it's easy as hell.

knowledge of electrical wiring (assuming electricity is available).
all-around ability to build things with natural and/or man-made materials
reloading (only a few calibers as of right now)

and here's one that doesn't seem like anyone's thought about. rather than trading away your ammo, you could offer someone security in exchange for something that you need.

One thing I've been looking into heavily lately is Gassifiers.  I'm pretty sure if you could cobble together gassifier gensets you'd be well set for trading.

Gasifiers are a huge idea.  We are going with wood gasifiers ourselves.

I don't know about all you fine gentlemen but I cannot afford to prep for other people. I can barely afford to prep for myself. So what I do is, older gear or gear I don't need do to having better fitting or just flat out better gear is what I wear and everything else goes into a separate area. Then when or if I upgrade again. Same thing.

But to be honest how I feel about it is, you shouldn't really get anything if you didn't have the fore-site to gear up yourself.
Also  if I am going to just hand out gear. That shit is going to be well earned. Starting with trust & responsibilities.

As far as simple trade goods. I'm running with Canadian mist blended whiskey(  rather inexpensive yet smooth) and .22cal. Those are my main barter items. Whiskey and bullets. Yeah I'm a simple SOB. But it realy does cover some barter basics.

I see a lot of good ideas here.  I'll add my thought.  I've said it before and I'll say it again.  Feminine Hygiene Products.

You can get them in small packages.  Women seem have preferences and a strong brand loyalty at present.  But I guarantee in a SHTF situation a woman (read her husband or significant other) will trade for whatever they can get.  No woman alive today has had to contend with how women used to deal with this issue and they will not like it one little bit.

What happens when women don't like something one little bit, especially at that time of month?  They bitch, not just your everyday complaining that they want this or that bitching.  We're talking non stop, nothing is going to make them happy until this situation is rectified type of bitching.  What do you think a dedicated man will trade to put an end to that?  If you've ever experienced it, you know the answer.  Anything, absolutely anything in his possession.

Oh.. sorry I don't recall reading the actual thread.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

Someone kick me in the balls please.

I have a bottle of jack, but Like picture says. Some invest in gold. I invest in Lead. Because I foresee that being the highest barter item. So. Here I am, storing not only for myself and usage but for tradeable's as well.

How about Sodium Hypochlorite? Cheap, easy and very little goes a long way.

I'm not talking about putting a ton of shit away for just giving away all willy nilly, I am talking about keeping my neighbors alive so they can be my early warning system first and foremost.

I like it WhiskeyJack, at the end of the summer you can always this years garden seeds for a third of the price. (that info might be good for the prepper too ;))

I can see that this is a great donation, it's providing the neighbors with some means of producing their own food while making you look like the good dude that you are.

So how about an
for their well?

Guys I want to say that I am not suggesting that we need to be able to "carry" our neighbors. What I am suggesting is that when we do these things for ourselves (make hand pumps, buy cheap seed or shelf stable bleach) we could very easily do some for others too.

We should be building our "Tribe" now but later works too.

Yep, we should all be working to grow our own GOOD Tribe right now.  Meaning people that you want, that have real skills, to be in your tribe.  It will be your own chance to survive an average SHTF scenario or long-term tough economic situation.  I'm sorry, but being on your own, living like an animal basically, just does not even seem to be worth surviving through.

Build a tribe that will make you want to have a reason to survive, a tribe that will not just help you survive, but will help you thrive!

I truly believe that survival is important, but you also want the chance to THRIVE as well.  To have some positive social interaction with good people.  To start a tribe, that maybe one day could even support a child into the situation.

Building a tribe should also mean to us single guys finding a lady with some real value beyond what she has beyond her thighs!!! The pretty off the shelf models are fun right now but they will be dead weight in SHTF and will probably cause problems for you in the long term in prepping.
