Hey guys,

I'm looking for some maps such as an atlas or just individual state maps.  Does anyone have any recommendations as far as quality and currentness?

I feel dumb for asking this, but unfortunately I'm part of the generation that began relying on Mapquest and GPS.

Actually they sell one in Walmart. 
Pretty accurate and up to date.
Rand Mcnally Atlas it's like $20.00 but you get quite a bit of info out of it. Its what I use. Sucks though cause my area is right in the section where they separated it in pages. So I have to look at two separate pages to get the full picture. But maybe you'll be more lucky.

I'll agree with that. The RandMcNally atlas's are pretty good quality. That being said, Superior Mapping is a no-go. I just bought one (can't have enough of those things) and it's crap. Put the two next to each other and you can instantly start pointing out road after road after road that the Rand has and the Superior is missing.

Also skippy, just about any local WalMart or even drugstores like Wallgreens/CVS/RightAid should all carry maps of your local area. You can never have too many of those. if you can find a laminated one GET IT! I always keep a local map and a miniature atlas in my BOB.

You should also look for some topographical maps of your area. I don't have any of those but it's on my to-do list. I can't remember where the hell he said I could get them, but TG told me a while back that it was very easy to find them. maybe the local library? are you a AAA member? you can go in and get as many road maps as you wish.

not just road maps, but ones with state parks, camp grounds, stuff like that too.

Often times you can get free state maps at truck stops and rest areas off of major highways. Also county governments should have hi-res PDF road and topographical maps of their respective  areas online (at least mine does). I would probably cycle out state road maps every year or two.

On that note, Mapquest will not let you print out " Satellite  " images, I tried to get some over head images of certain places and it just won't let you do it.  :-[

You can get USGS (United States Geologic Survey) maps here http://www.usgs.gov/pubprod/

You can download them and print them at home but they will be the wrong size... i.e. the paper is too small to fit the map onto.

You can go to Kinko's and get them to print them on the right sized paper... but that is expensive.

You can go to your local University's Library and get them to make you a copy of any of the maps that they have in their map room... This is the option I go with most of the time. It cost me $4 to get a black and white topo on regular paper... Sure it wears out pretty quick but that is what I am buying a throw away map.

The USGS will print you full size/full colour maps for $7 each if I recall correctly, don't contact your local branch. Use the website.

I think that the best option by far for something that you are going to keep in your kit is to get one of those Nat Geo map printers at REI to print you a map, they use this awesome plastic as paper and that shit is way better than any laminated crap I've ever seen. You can cut the map and its still waterproof. It is really a good option and you can get your map how ever you like it.. The usgs map doesn't show enough area? no problem. You live on the edge of the usgs map? no problem. You need to pour gas into something and don't have a funnel? no problem. These are the best maps I have ever used and worth the money at twice the price.
