Carrying at home
« on: December 10, 2011, 03:14:44 PM »
this thread is meant to go along with Frosty's "what do you have on your person right now" thread. http://straightprep.com/forum/index.php?topic=1231.0

I didn't want to hijack his thread, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on carrying your sidearm at home. whether it be concealed or open doesn't matter.
Do you think it's silly? essential? do you always have it close by but not necessarily on you? whatever your common practices are, post it here.

I'm personally voting for "sometimes". For me, I'd really rather say "most of the time" but I can't honestly say "always".

I voted "other," because I cannot due to house rules: kids in the house, no loaded pistol outside of the safe, and all other firearms unloaded. I would carry if I didn't have to worry about disturbance of peace. If I have legitimate reason to believe that something is happening, or may happen in the near future, of course I'm carrying.  ;)

well I'm not going to question your choices when it comes to child safety. (plus I think yours is a bit older than mine if I remember correctly)

however I will say that I've never seen an issue with carrying around children if it's on your person and your more intelligent than Mr. "Glock-fowty".
one thing that I will definitely need to reassess in the near future is my practice of keeping my 12g loaded outside of the safe. of course there's nothing in the pipe, and the crossbolt safety is on, but still, as she gets older and more mobile, that practice is going to have to come to an end. as a matter of fact, I may just go ahead and throw it in the safe after typing this. granted, she's never in my bedroom unattended, but still, Murphy's Law is alive and well in my household...

furthermore, a long gun is always better no matter which way you look at it, but if it's just a simple home invasion/robbery, I don't see how anything more than a handgun is truly needed to eliminate the threat. especially once you factor in the fact that YOU are intimately familiar with the layout of your house and the intruder is not, and ideally you should have your bedroom set up in the most defensible way possible, giving you every advantage over your assailant. (you should also be intimately familiar with your handgun, obviously)

the 1911 sleeps on my bedside table next to me, and I haven't been able to find a good reason to lock it up overnight. My daughter sleeps with a baby monitor, and that sumbitch is LOUD on the receiving end. plus we have this little plastic door-knob thing that prevents toddlers from opening doors.

my practices may change in the future, but for right now I don't see any problems with what I do with regards to child safety. (except for that shotgun, which I think I'll lock up from now on)

all this is just my opinion, Rah. you do whatever you need to do to feel safe and secure.

Personally, I have no problem carrying a loaded weapon on my hip. It's in a secure holster, and I'm not going to sleep without putting it in my safe. The not carrying it around the house bit is for peace in marriage. If my wife had her way, I'd never carry it at all and it would be separated from the ammunition on the other side of the house.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

I love my wife. She's loyal, she'll do whatever it takes for our family to survive and thrive, and she's a love. However, she can be as stubborn as me, and very hard-headed. Guns are something she fears (not just logically), and it can be a sensitive issue with her. She feels she gave up a lot of ground with me telling her that I would carry outside of the house whether she wanted me to do so or not, because it is my constitutional right to do so.

I picked number 4 because I don't have anything to carry.

My faithful 12 gauge is never out of reach in my place. Nothing like #4 Buck 3" Magnum indoors.

That and I pretty much carry a secondary at all times as well. Generally, Something is well within reach at all times.
