I think he knew he would get caught for what he did, and he's serving his time.  That's part of what makes him a hero in my eyes.  He literally gave his life (life in prison) to do what he thought was right. 

Also, that would just have made him even more of a martyr, I guess.  I would actually say that if I were in his place, I would most likely want to be put to death, over being in prison or "the hole" for the rest of my life.

Actually, the difference is that I was educated in a time when they taught you how to think instead of what to think.  Back before the education system decided it was all the rage to imprint PC bullshit on the young people's brains.  So when I look at things I don't have a filter that I view them through.  Just kind of see them as they are.
