Mossberg Shockwave
« on: February 07, 2018, 01:32:47 AM »
Be careful if you decide or start looking into purchasing one of these.  Or the similar Remington.  Below is a report I received through the Virginia Citizens Defense League (state level NRA group) discussion that weapon.

I give it credibility based on the organization.

7. A member's experience with the new Mossberg Shockwave
************************************************************

The Mossberg Shockwave is a 12-gauge shotgun (now in 20 gauge, too) with a pistol grip instead of a stock and a 14-inch barrel.  It is NOT considered a short-barreled shotgun under the law, however.  Member John V. shared his experience with me on firing one:

-

A personal story concerning the Shockwave:

I was in Afghanistan training the Afghan Border Police when a number of them showed up at my training site.

Wow, these are pretty neat little shotguns! Let's go try 'em out!

But what's this little pussy-strap on the fore grip for? (I knew what it was for, but being a tough guy there was no way in Hell I was going to use it because I was not a pussy!)

So I grabbed one and went to the range. I loaded it up with 00 Buck, stuck it out in front of me, and let fly - ka-BOOOOOOM!

HOLY S**T!!! They say that the first shot should always be a surprise - well, SURPRISE!!!

The thing flew up out of my support hand and over my head, and almost out of my fire control hand because I didn't use the Pussy Strap.

Yeah, I know.

Hey, if somebody wants one of those things, more power to you, whatever floats your boat. But owners who think they want one for personal or home defense, or maybe a car gun, REALLY need to go to the range and practice with it to understand what this little gadget is about - it is a close-quarters tool - and to figure out what load to use.

True to its name, it is DEFINITELY not controllable like a regular shotgun unless you use the Pussy Strap. It is a fire-breather, and the muzzle blast is terrific, to say the least. If you aren't properly prepared for blazing away indoors, or God forbid, from the inside of a car, your head will pay a heavy price - and so will the heads of the range patrons in neighboring stalls.

Be considerate with this thing - use an outdoor range. And use the Pussy Strap.

As for me, I'll stick with something a little more tame, like maybe a .416 Rigby.  ;-)

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

God created Man, Col. Sam Colt made him equal, John Moses Browning turned equality to perfection, Gaston Glock turned perfection into plastic fantastic junk.

When I first saw these advertised I thought "What crazy person would want one of these". If you couldn't tell it was uncontrollable you don't deserve a gun at all.
I pity the newbe who buys one for home defense. :faint:

My experience is a little different. I have an 870-14. Have shot about 1000 rounds of 3 dram 12 gauge through it as the process of sorting it out. It functions well. I have no trouble holding on to it in a proper grip; don't try to shoot from hip because mechanics works against you. Hold it in a good isocoles stance and sight over the entire barrel. Recoil is managebale that way.

The 870 is all steel, so it's heavy. I would get a 20 gauge instead of a 12 gauge if I had it to do over again.

This is a specialized tool. Primarily for breaching. Secondary as a PDW.

It is loud, but not much more tan an 18 inch riot gun.

If you have need for it, it's good. It should not be anyone's first shotgun.

That's what I meant some newbe buying one and thinking he doesn't need to practice because it's a shotgun.

I haven't heard many positive reviews regarding the Shockwave. Every review that I've read says that it is punishing to fire 00 buck or slugs through it.  Most reviewers advised using lesser loads in it.  I think I'll stick with my Mossberg 500 or the Keltec KSG, at least I can control them.

This is my next purchase. It is illegal in NY, NJ, CT, IL, and CA. because it has a pistol grip, flash suppressor, and is semi automatic.

MSRP is ~$1,050- BUT I can get at cost.

I read a test report on it and the only negative was with the pistol grip it is awkward to move the safety.

I want one I want one

Funny story:

My partner in crime at the Shot Show makes his home in New York. He has two masters, one is the ATF&E and one is the NY State Police. anyway......

I was at the show to help him make some deals as well as for my selfish reasons  ;) some of which are a can for my AR & handgun, a semi-auto tactical shotgun, a nice 700 round per minute SBR, and just because a semi-auto .50 cal. rifle. PLUS all of the accessories needed for written weapons. In essence, everything that is illegal in New York.

Well at each stop on my trek my partner had to handle said illegal items in New York and as he handed back the tool to the company rep he would reply, "Just by me touching that, I will be stopped coming back into NY." Then he would slather his hands with sanitizing hand gel and say, "maybe this will help."

He told me many horror stories during that trip about the BS he has to go through with the state of NY. IMO, it really does not make it worth what he does with his FFL. I guess that is New York's purpose.

Johny  Look at the Benelli M2 (M1 Super 90 if you can find one used) or the Stoeger M3000.  The Stoeger is a "replica" or knock off of the Benelli and most any accessory you can put on an M2.  They M3000 is MSRP of around $600. Like the inertial system in the Benelli they cycle all loads including low brass and reduced power loads reliably. The 930s are fairly notorious for having reliability issues with many reduced power and low brass loads. I have done up a couple of Stoegers for people as full 3 Gun rigs as well as tactical set ups.  They are as nice as my M1 Super90 for a significantly lower $$$.  If I were to do it again I would definitely put the M3000 at the top of my list.

On a separate note I prefer a traditional stock to a Pistol Grip for controlling a shotgun, but that is all personal preference.

As always CJS06 thank you.

So are you thinking the Stoeger 31890FS or 31891FS? Pics here.

As a separate note and more in line with the initial thread.  It seems that most of the Shockwaves and similar R870 versions that are sold are being done so as novelty guns like the double barrel 1911, .50 Desert Eagle and such and have very little practicality.  Some will be "used" for home defense or as a truck gun but in reality the chances of these actually getting used are so small that they are statistically insignificant.

What I find more than funny is the accessory market that has already popped up for these. I mean a full length top rail with forward quad rail section? Really? So you need to mount what to these things......optics(um no, useless) a light(at contact range a light is moot), a laser or IR designator (sorry had to put it out there)?

Having a gun that is difficult to control with very heavy recoil and concussion is just not a good idea for what turns out to be a significant number of the people who are buying them.  If Vegas had odds on the number of rounds that will end up going through these guns I would take the under on 10.

Exactly!  I personally prefer the 31890FS but for a pistol grip the 31891FS is a good way to go.

Anybody looking at what Gabe Suarez and his crew are doing with these short shotguns?
Got some interesting ideas and options for using these things in a tactical way.
Not for everybody, but may fill a niche for some folks.

I think they will make great little bear guns for up my way, at least for those who dont carry a .44 or .454 (lighter and easier to swing into action)
