It's perplexing that you guys take me more seriously than i do.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

Its not really about the joke you made. Your joke just turned into a semi serious discussion.

Don't worry your heart out about that  :D

Even glib or smartassed comments can lead to careful consideration with sharp people.

Tossing out some numbers for you doubters of this fine old round, let's use the 170 grain flat soft point (speer) leaving the muzzle at a stately 1900 fps with a ballistic coefficient of .3 zeroed at 200 yards (yes I know that zero range is blasphemy to some)
100 yards about 5.5" rise (call that 6" for us ornery old bastards that don't care for excess "precision")
200 yards obvious
300 yards about -22.5" (call it 2 feet, easy to remember, 605 foot pounds of energy)
400 yards about -66.5" (call that 5 and a half foot with 480 f.p.e.)
500 yards about -138" (that's 11.5 feet of drop easy on the mind as a touch under 12" with about 400 f.p.e.)

A decent lever will give you 2  to 2 and a half moa, a fine one probably 1 and a quarter and quite a few of us know what the particular round we favor in this caliber can do. And by the way you can load 2 spitzer boat tails, one in the chamber one in the tube or do the shot gun handfull of shells just dropped in as you go.

My Marlin 336c has been my faithful hunting rifle for years. Within its intended range, I've always hit what I shoot at and never have to shoot twice. Jacketed soft-point all the way!

Colombo, is there actually a soft point 30/30 bullet that has a BC in the .300's or is that a theoretical..Seems a tad high, But i suppose its not that off so it could be.

Yes and you can get even better, I've seen 220 grain flat point cast loaded in some guns.
