Food For Thought About EDC
« on: October 12, 2023, 01:04:58 AM »
Most Preppers have more than one weapon. I don't think it's a good idea to have your Every Day Carry be a really expensive weapon. If you are ever in a Self Defense situation, you can bet the farm that the weapon you used to defend yourself will be taken as evidence. Pick something that is very reliable and decent caliber and doesn't cost much. Even if you are not charged, or if you are found innocent, it's a bitch to get your weapon back. You almost need a lawyer to fill out all the paperwork and go through all the procedures just to have it returned. Mine is a 380 that cost about $300 and it isn't one of those skinny little skeleton looking pieces of crap that seems to be everywhere.

A used Glock is still a Glock. Reliable and cheap better than a pocket pistol if you have to fight your way to your rifle

Here, 9mm, semiauto, 10rdx2 , Double action only.  $300ish . It's never going to win at the range, but it beats going to boots and blade in the first five seconds of street combat, especially for this old man.  I can't move like I used to, back when I was a young soldier.

Remington R-51, light, aluminum frame, 9mm, 7 rounds, designed for carry.  No sharp hooky corners or anything to snag up, grip safety automatically disengaged with held, dual sided mag release.  Preferred for better cover.

Or a 3.5 in barrel Springfield 1911, 45acp.  Preferred for potency.

But with winter coming and more clothing meaning easier covering, and nervousness around the world I think I will be adding Hi Power to selection.  For more usage between reloadings.

BHP was inherited from Dad but its just so much more comfortable for carry and concealment than 5906.

If its choosing what I need to keep me off a stainless steel table, I will go with what I have and know and know is reliable.

If you want something solid, reliable, but low cost look into Hi Point.  About $200.  They are near indestructible and lifetime warranty.  Youtube them if you don't believe that.

I don't have a problem carrying an expensive EDC.  I want a weapon that I'm familiar with, and one that is reliable and accurate.  Carry what you want, but I want every possible advantage.  And yes, your weapon may be confiscated after an incident, so avoid the issue by having multiple guns of the same make and model.  Standardization works for the military and for police departments; I think it'll work for me, too.  Remember, two is one, and one is none.  Having multiple, identical weapons means you have spare parts.

 Depending upon my day, I'll be carrying either a H&K VP9, H&K USP .45, or a S&W CSX.

I dont really care what you carry, cheap or expensive.  The Police holding my gun as evidence post a shooting should not be a factor.  Being alive to reclaim it later is much more important.  Whatever you carry just make sure you are as proficient with it as you can be.  Too many people train with their full or "duty" sized gun then carry something else compact for EDC.  Make sure you as competent with your EDC or find a way to carry what you have trained with.

In the summer "t-shirt weather" I carry a Sig 365X.  As soon as the weather turns I go right to my ACW Quantico (2011).  My ACW is my go to for any "tactical" training that I do.  I make sure to regularly spend time with the Sig as well.

Along the lines of training with what you carry, sights/dots have become a consideration.  If you always train with a red dot then look into one for your EDC.  Likewise if you always shoot irons in training dont drop a red dot on your EDC.  Been seeing alot of that lately. Again the most important thing is to train with your gear to retain proficiency.

When I interpret it as carry more ammo, yes.

Ruger American Pro 9mm-  picked up a couple for steal several years back and one or the other of them are always within reach when out and about. An old S&W4506 and a much older BHP sometimes see use in that role, but are mostly "in the house" pieces.

Good article.  Agreed - more mags.

I've been looking for current intel on T-cells.  Anyone have a source?

Last night, I took my wife out to dinner, no carry. Resorted to spring loaded pocket folder and tacPen/glass breaker (ruin someone's day).  My plan is to GTFO of a situation if I can, otherwise ruin someone's day.  It's time to change up and reevaluate what we used to call normal and be ever more vigilant.
