Bullet Size Out of Your AR 15
« on: January 08, 2012, 08:47:25 PM »
I am reloading brass with 55 gr FMJBT (Winchester). I am buying 55 gr SPBT reloaded cartridges through Cabela's which we use for coyotes and other similar game.

I was thinking of going a little heavier maybe 62 gr.

I'm running 1/12 so a 55 grain for me. Gives the ballistics a 5.56 was designed to do. Less penetration and more tumbling.

Hear ya' RvR. My AR's are 1/7 which is why I am thinking of starting to reload 62gr. and maybe a bit higher hence the poll. Maybe I should have included rifle twist in this poll.

Now my .54 flint lock rocks at 1/66. I can throw RB's in under  2" @ 100 yards all day long as long as I swab the barrel between shots and I do my part.

my SHFT  ammo is 62 grain.
My multipurpose general use ammo is 55 grain.

I'd love to get my hands on some of the new stuff that the mil is using. I believe it's like 72 grain or around there.

No, for the military to up and switch bullet weights would cost millions upon millions of dollars and we would have heard about it. So unless you got proof of such. It did not happen.
( Select units ) can use what ever they please that is why they are select units, the geneva convention does not apply to them.  Mostly because they don't exist.

I am reloading both 55gr Montana Gold (500 for $48.99) and 77gr HPBT Sierra MatchKing (500 for $100ish) for long range performance.

Truth be told Montana Gold makes a fantastic .224 bullet, I wish they made a 77gr too.

I'm running a pair of colt 6920's myself both factory 1/7. If you can afford the heavier grain bullets go for it. Should result in better accuracy as a rule of thumb. I have heard of exceptions though. For plinking go with whatever you can find cheapest. For plinking stuff check out wideners if you havnt already. For yotes, if what you have works the way you want it, no sense in changing

$49- for 500- WOW! I just paid $110 for 1,000 Winchester 55 gr FMJ bullets. Good price if the postage doesn't set you back. I will google them and check 'em out.

I havnt found anything MG makes to be any less than stellar. Love their 124 gr TMJ HP in 9mm. They arnt designed for expansion but very consistent.

Hey 9mm,

my Colts are 6920's. I also had a Rock River custom build a AR for me that had a 1:7 barrel too. I sold the rifle to my brother when I needed some $$$$.

Check out First Class Bullets and Brass, you can not beat their price for bullets. I also but their 40s&w FMJ bullets and find them to be quite nice.
