Ammo Prices Leveling and Starting to Come Down
« on: April 27, 2021, 11:55:33 AM »
I watch ammo prices not to buy just to see when we level off. I am seeing supplies available again, and prices starting to drop a bit. Here is an example of IMI 62gr green tip 556 that was at $1.06 per round in January,

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/2090460512?utm_source=weekly-specials&utm_medium=email&utm_content=product_2_link&utm_campaign=process

If the Biden team does nothing stupid between now and summer, I suspect we will see availability of ammo widespread consequently, prices will follow.

Will we ever reach the 33 cents a round for 556 or 20 cents a round for 9mm again...I doubt it. With that written, when 556 reaches that 50-55 cents a round, I will buy again to replenish my stock used for training. Reloading components will probably become available too.

Stay tuned.  :coffeeNews:

I guess I'm just a pessimist. I think prices will continue to slowly climb because of Hyper Inflation rather than lack of availability. When I was buying ammo, I thought that I was out of my mind for buying more than I would ever need but in the back of my mind I probably was thinking that one day, this ammo will be used as MONEY. In todays world, I actually do think that it will be a very valuable trade item.

Johny

Just recently I was able to pickup some 68gr BTHP  for under $1.00/rd.  This was not much more expensive than it had been prior to the craziness.  Still not at the .30-.33/rd we used to see for M193, but some ammo prices are definitely leveling out. Lets hope they start to drop.

We will see much more availability shortly. As the shortage kicked off a ton of people....like everybody ordered lots from everyone they could. Now we are starting to get people unable to pay for some of the large (sometimes duplicate) shipments. I really think we will see availability start to turn around more quickly than previously expected.

The other day I was talking to the Pres. of ammo.com.

He told me that companies never increased manufacturing qty's because they were stuck at pre 2019 qty's. That is why 556 as an example, was selling at 33-cents a round. Then add to the equation a whole shitone (Financial term) of folks buying firearms just after the Chinese virus went viral (Pun intended). And every new gun owner wanting to try out there new toy has added to the shortage and added greatly to reduced qty and prices going up.

Thx Chris for your comments.

At my local gunstore: 22LR  @3.99/50 (Aguila), 6.99/50 (CCI),  .223 hovering around 15.00/20 for the cheapest, .308 around 35.00/20 (cheapest), though as high as 54.00, 12g 2 3/4 slugs 5.90/5 (Remington), .410 16.98/25 (Federal). Several other calibers in stock too: .303, 450 bushmaster, 12g 7.5, .17, 8mm Mauser, 6mm creedmore, 6.5 creedmore, a very little 300 blackout, .50 BMG, plus a few others.  The local Academy Sports actually got some ammo in too: .224 Valkyrie, 5.45 and 7.62 x54.
I snagged some 22lr and some .410 (even though it was overpriced) and a stray box of 22 WMR at the gun store- I've just recently picked up a Joe Biden special: A Chiappa Double Beaver in .22LR and .410- I figure its safe from getting banned for a least a little while and it looks like a good teaching gun for the grandkids.

I got some 5.56 M855 at the local Cabela's the other day for $14 / 20. I was shocked it was so cheap, then realized I've already gotten used to outrageously expensive as normal and just normal expensive as cheap.

yeah jhm.

Yesterday I bought a special hinge. As I was driving away I had second thoughts that I had purchased the correct one. Turned around and dropped off the hinge on the front counter with the receipt.

Got the correct one and started the exchange with the cashier. In the end, I owed 10¢ more. Reached into my pocket and came out with some change and 3, .22LR's. The cashier said with a perfectly straight face, "If you do not have the 10¢, I will take the 3 or 4 .22's ya' have there." LOL

Times they are a-changing.

I'm afraid the more people that think .55/rd or similar is reasonable the less likely we are to see it come down further in price. That's no criticism of people who buy at that price level, just an observation. I'm going to wait it out for 5.56/.223, .308, 9mm, and .45 and see what happens when Remington gets back into full production.  As far as the Biden admin doing something screwy, as long as they dont ban ammo imports I think we might catch a break later in the year.

Thank you for finding the link.  I couldn't do it from my phone and forgot to do it when I got home.

Still an outrageous price, but I've seen it at $1 per round at the local gun store.
