Water storage?
« on: January 31, 2015, 11:50:51 AM »
Some SHTF sites tell us that we should change our drinking water storage every so-often but never give the reason why. If the water has been filtered and stored in a regulation container how long can it be stored and why? I have four 5gal. containers with locking cap designed for water storage and if I change the water the locking caps become useless as locking caps.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

for my 2ยข worth.

- no container it "perfectly" safe.  since water seems to be the universal solvent, chemicals from the container leach into the water.  flushing it out from time to time keeps the chemical load to a minimum. I've had enough metallic tasting desalinated water in my life - the flavor was provided by stainless steel.

- no water is pure (outside of very carefully controlled conditions) - replacing it from time to time lessens the probability bacteria will multiply to an extent the water becomes dangerous to drink.  -have some fun.  put a jar of water in a sunny  window sill and keep it topped off.  see how long it takes to turn green :) want some real fun?  look at a sample under a microscope the bacterial load is awe inspiring.  sealing the water just seals in what it came with.

- replacing the water from time to time is a good maintenance practice - you can check for leaks and vessel / seal integrity. - black mold growing in the wee corners of your basement or shed can be annoying.

there are probably a list of good reasons - but the above are the ones that came to mind first.

I agree with Kbop.

I have extra water put aside. Not much as I have access to a natural spring/well. The longest I keep water that I have chlorinated is 3 months. I do 1 Tsp of non scented beach per 5 gallons.

IMO the primary reason is Kebobs send paragraph.

When its dark and cool there is almost no leaching of chems into the water ... this i sbecause water is polar and hydrocarbons are non polar. "Like dissolves like" the plastic leaches almost not at all especially when the container is not exposed to strong direct sunlight for long p[eriods.

Incidentally the clear plastic bottles are higher quality material than the opaque ones.
