Storing saltines?
« on: July 03, 2015, 06:44:34 PM »
I read somewhere on another forum that you should store dry crackers or saltines. Seeing that crackers are frigile should they be stored in the box and should an oxygen absorber be put in the box or in the mylar bag that you put the crackers in?
It would be nice to have crackers with soup or stew even rice&beans.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

I would put an absorber into the bag they are vacuum sealed in but only take that to the lighter suction before sealing.  Cracker crumbs are great, but not so much in soup and stuff.

I just vacuum seal them in mason jars. Stack them on an out of the way shelf or put a few in 5 gal. buckets with other stuff.

I don't know if this is a good place for this post but;
I chose not to store saltines ( they are portable, cheap and easy) but space is limited.
my solution was to store wheat, & salt - I have a mill.  I'm thinking I could make hardtack or crackers if needed or sprout the seeds or...

I do love the mason jar idea - keeps them intact, dry and insect free with no grinding or baking needed.  most saltines have some type of oil or fat - how long will they keep?

I dunno about "long" term. So far I've always rotated thru them during the winter months, soup/chili season. The oldest I've got is just over a year, packed last summer. Got a good deal on peanut butter so they'll be gone soon and I'll seal up some more.

For any longer, I'd go with the "hardtack". You could go ahead and make them now before shtf. I'm probably the only person here who's torn between the idea of having grains/mill and something pre-made. I just can't wrap my head around the idea of having time to "bake" with all the other stuff that'll need doing when things go south. Heck, it's a chore now, much less later. And if it fails now, no big deal. Feed to a critter or toss it. Later a fail, well, you know......

Besides, with hardtack, if you don't get around to eating them, you can build something with them, reinforce a door, stuff 'em in your plate carrier or something.   :sarcasm:

pre making hardtack is a good idea.  Your mention of hardtack did remind me of something else I should do.  I think i'll check my hammers  :)

General good idea but mason jars are heavier and more useful after opening.  Vacuum bags are lighter, store easier but no more real use after opening.  Take your pick or better yet, use some of both.  Don't want to store mason jars for future use without making use of their intent and space they take up now.

Or just click below and learn to make Corn Dodgers.  If they are good enough for Rooster Cogburn's pocket, they are good enough for me.
