How prepared are you for SHTF
« on: November 16, 2023, 05:03:54 PM »
I found this article and I think it's something we could all learn from. I would be interested to know how you rate your preparedness level on this scale of 0 through 5.  I scored a 4.833 - working to better ourselves.

How Prepared Are You For SHTF?  (5 levels of Preparedness)

Level 0 ? Unprepared for SHTF
Someone in level 0 has no surviving skills and no food skills. Basically speaking, they would be ?the walking dead? in a SHTF scenario.

Level 1 ? SHTF and Prepping Novice
A beginner in prepping can survive at least two weeks of minor chaos, like a typhoon raging outside or a mega ice storm.

A beginner would have the following:
? Available water and food in the house can last for two full weeks.
? Have a means of producing heat and/or cooking without using power such as a fireplace or a kerosene heater or stove.
? Mayor may not have weapons for defending one?s self.
? Have a stocked 1st aid kit.
? Will have to go out of their shelter to seek food after two weeks.

Level 2 ? SHTF Advanced Beginner
In my opinion, a level 2 means being able to survive at least 1 month of a disaster, like heavy snows that won?t let up for weeks or a devastating hurricane.

If you?re in this category, you have a few of these ready to use.
? Available food and water stored can last for a full 4 weeks. The food and water are in the form of bottled water and canned goods, which can survive a lot of nasty scenarios.
? Have about a month?s worth of fuel like firewood or have a power generator with enough juice to run for a month.
? Own some weapons for defending one?s self like a shotgun or a pistol.
? Have a well-stocked first-aid kit and enough medications for family members or self who needs maintenance medications.
? Posses a means of communications like a portable radio with enough battery for a full month.

Level 3 ? Competent Prepper
A competent prepper can last through devastating events like civil unrest for a full 3 months. He?ll have:
?  A well-stocked pantry and water purification system.
? Woodstove or fireplace with enough fuel for heat and cooking.
? Multiple defensive weapons and ammunition.
? Be part of a prepping group.
? Have stocks of batteries or a means of recharging batteries without being on the power grid.
? Keep 3 months of medical supplies like prescription medications.
? Have a radio.

Level 4 ? SHTF Proficient
Congratulate yourself if you fall under this category! Someone who is SHTF proficient can live for a year through a disaster like a worldwide economic collapse.

If you belong to this group, you will:
? Have a long term and short term food pantry and water purification system plus offsite storage for extra supplies.
? Be able to produce your own food if needed ? either through gardening or through some small farm animals like chickens.
? Have at least 2,000 rounds of ammunition per weapon and some extra weapons hidden in an offsite location.
? Maintain some knowledge of natural medicines as well as a cache of antibiotics.
? Have a strong defense system composed of at least 6 adults who can rotate guard duties. May include a dog too.
? Can bug out if needed with full survival gear for hiking and camping.

Level 5 ? SHTF Expert
An expert in prepping can survive multiple years of SHTF. These people are homesteading experts (here?s a good beginner guide for homesteading), as well as survival experts. It?s like Martha Stewart?s DNA spliced with Rambo and Chuck Norris!

SHTF experts are prepared all the way! They usually:
? Have a small farm or very large piece of land for gardening. They?ll also know how to store harvested food as well as harvest seeds for the following year and have some extra for giving away.
? Can raise and breed farm animals like horses, cattle, goats, and sheep.
? Have a means of travel, like a horse.
? Own more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition per weapon as well as a cache of weapons with spares.
? Can generate their own power, either through a solar panel or via bioenergy generation, and store it.
? Have an irrigation system of water supply on-site.
? Can repair and build buildings like barns and houses.
? Have natural on-site water sources for farm and home.
? Know of another site to bug out to if needed, like a cabin in the woods or the mountains.
? Have medical knowledge and can deliver babies at home as well as have minor surgery, like stitching up wounds.
? Keep stores of precious metals for barter (gold and silver)
? Can produce their own clothing, either from plant fibers or wool.

Good morning Nemo,

Well then, respectfully, you have work to do.
What is it thats holding you back; age, health, income, location, storage space...?

I'll have to subtract from my own score, unfortunately.  As I sat down with my morning coffee ☕ the reality of population density slapped me in the face
The HOA, nearby apartment buildings, and university are my wildcards. One year ago, I lived on a rural 5 acre homestead with a beginners garden, chickens and pigs. But Illinois politics and family needs caused the wife and I to relocate somewherewithin the Southwest region. So, my goal is to find another rual setting. Plans are in the works, but interest rates and world events may prevent us from doing anything. Bottom line, my score must come down to factor in location and population density.  This holds me to a score less than 4.

I like how the author has established preparedness levels, but there needs to be a way to factor in situational considerations that are out of your control; like population density and location.  So, I'll go back to the opening post and add a score deduction paragraph.

Stay moving and motivated

I guess I have a mixed bag - some from 3, 4 and 5. All in all, a 4 minus the farm animals and radio.

Well then, respectfully, you have work to do.

We all always do.  I don't think anyone is ever fully prepared.

Everything I get done leads me to thinking of 2 or 3 more than I need to finish up or get started on.

When you are "Fully Prepared" let the rest of us here know you're done and your coordinates.  We will all come live with you.

I've been prepping since 2008 and have all sorts of extra things. However, none of us will ever be totally prepared for SHTF. After all these years, I still run across things that I think I will need. I started out prepping by getting multiuse items and I always try to keep that in mind even today. Just one of those would be 90% Alcohol to use as antiseptic and fuel for my hand size alcohol stove. If you're a drinking person, you might consider 190 Proof drinking alcohol and you would have 3 uses for it. By the way... I have about 20 pair of Dollar Store reading glasses that range from 1.25 power up to 3.0 power.

Gotta figure water out. Here in the SW, that is more important than food. If you can wait the unprepared over water then the threat will reduce dramatically in days.

Second the notion of fast population decline in the SW should our tech falter - there simple _aren't_ many surface waters available (which were more numerous in pioneer days before we began "management" and pumping of aquifers.)
Dependent on my own well, the water level is 500 feet down.   And my only way to run the pump at moment is by generator (for which I have a considerable store of propane) - only one well in the neighborhood is able to run on solar.
Such a vital resource - so vulnerable to the vagaries of breakdown, waylay.
Being prepared means many things and my water situation underlines, "If you can't hold it, you don't own it".
