Food Prices - What is Going On

I know that this is just JohnyMac paranoia but I have to share my recent observations on inflation from RI.

MrsMac and I just got back from RI doing stuff at our house there for about 10 days. We went shopping the day after we got there at the local grocery store, Stop n' Shop. They are a division of the Giant grocery store chain that spans most of the Mid Atlantic and NE.

Bottom-line, we were shocked to see the prices of meat and vegetables. Potatoes were going for a dollar a pound. Asparagus was on sale from between $3.99 to $4.99 a pound - ON SALE! Basic yellow onions $1.49 a pound. Hamburger on sale $4.99 a pound. NY Steak was $12.99, rib eye $14.99 and lowly sirloin was $10.99 a pound. Pork was pricey too. A whole Pork loin was on sale for $2.99 a pound.

I bought a quart of whole milk and it was $1.79 and eggs started at $3.99 a doz. WTF!

Are you folks seeing similar prices in your grocery stores?

Here are some prices up at the cabin to use as for a comparison...

NY Steak $8.99 pound
Hamburger $3.99-$4.99 a pound
Sirloin steak $8.99 a pound
Rib steak $10.99 a pound
Potatoes between 40 - 79 cents a pound. Onions priced similarly.
Milk 92-99 cents a quart
Eggs $2.99 a doz
A whole pork loin $1.99 a pound and if you shop around $1.69 a pound
Local not from S.America Asparagus $2.99 to $3.99 a pound

We thought it was just Stop n' Shop in RI so we went to several other national grocery stores and saw similar prices.

If you are seeing it in your grocery store (s), what is driving these prices?
If your grocery store (s) are more inline with the pricing up at the cabin, why are things so high priced in the NE?

Just thinking about the last shopping trip that seems similar to prices in my area.  I will get the local sale flyers and check in the next day or 3.

Delaware: NY strip steak $14.99lb ground beef $5.99lb. My wife bought two green peppers $2.00 each tomato's $3.99lb.
We're moving there, it seems the prices are cheaper.  :sarcasm: :lmfao:

Thx JoJo, before I comment I would like to red what other folks are seeing. One quick thought though is...I am not hearing or reading about any noise on this subject. It makes me wonder.

If you haven't started get your gardens running and that chicken coup up and loaded with chickens.

chicken breast 1.38 lb
bottom round 2.98 lb
10 pounds of spuds 3.00
tomatoes (beefsteak) 1.28 lb
vidalia jumbo onions .68 lb
ny strip steak 8.99 lb
porterhouse 11.99 lb
boston butt 1.79 lb
pork chops 1.28 lb

now I'm hungry, gonna go start the charcoal.......

Left off milk. Milk is 2.89 a gallon unless you shop where I do. They give stamps for stuff you buy anyway. Turn that little book in when full and milk is free. Haven't priced eggs in a while, neighbor brings them to me. I give 'em three or four bottle of wine each fall, I get eggs all year.   :cheers:

Nah, Crossville is up on the plateau. Some might consider East TN, but I go by the time zone change. I'm south of Nashvegas, North of Chattanooga, west of the plateau and east of Jackson. That ought to narrow it down a bit, as close as I'm gonna admit anyway.

Yeah Jmac, that's why I limited it to several hundred square miles. Larger than several states up north.

I have him dialed in for support.  Kroger is not necessary so far.  But they're in reserve.  JM is not specifically located as to what hill but the mortars are ready to go in a pattern to cover him from the next hill or 2 should he need it.  Hail they might land on top of him.  He hides good.
