Food Inflation In My Grocery Store
« on: August 04, 2022, 07:36:09 AM »
I have had several folks ask me what products in the grocery store I use to determine 'real' inflation. This is the list I use. What is yours?

> English Cucumber, each
> Baby carrots, 1-lb
> Vidalia onions, 1-lb
> Pepperidge Farm seeded rye bread
> Chicken thighs and drum sticks
> 80/20 hamburger, 1-lb
> Oscar Myer Bacon, 1-lb
> House brand 4-lb sugar
> House brand 5-lb flour
> House brand 1000-sheet toilet paper (4-pack)
> Bounty paper towels, 1-roll
> House brand salted butter, 1-lb
> Fleishmann's quick action dry yeast 3-pack
> Whole Milk, 1-qt
> House brand eggs, large 1-doz
> Fancy Feast canned cat food, 1, 3-oz can
> Lay's potato chips, family size
> House brand can of vegetables, 14.5-oz can
> Hellman's mayonnaise, 30-oz jar
> House brand creamy peanut butter, 16.3-oz

What are the grocery store items you use to monitor inflation?

Dairy:
Store brand gallon of milk
Lactaid (wife's lactose intolerant)
yogurt
cottage cheese
store brand eggs
1lb. unsalted butter
shredded cheese

Meat/poultry/fish:

80/20 hamburger
Chicken breast
canned tuna
Polish kielbasa

Veggies/fruits

banannas
yellow onions
potatos
Bush's baked beans
Vigo red beans and rice

Other:

Peanut butter (JIF, if I can find the damn stuff these days, otherwise Skippy)
low salt potato chips
Diet Pepsi/Diet Dr Pepper
Paper towels (Brawny)
toliet tissue (Cottonelle)

I have 3 grocery stores within 3 miles of my house, a Kroger (which I dont shop at since they went woke), a Publix, and an Ingle's (a North Carolina based chain), and also use Amazon Fresh. Neither Ingle's or Publix has what I consider good prices, but Ingle's has huge variety and large fresh produce section, while Publix has a lot of BOGOs that I take advantage of frequently.

Since the first of the year, I've noticed very large upticks on basically anything dairy, but especially butter, Lactaid milk, cottage cheese, and shredded cheese  (so much so I've done away with convienence and found my old cheese grater). Banannas- yeah theyre cheap but when they jump from .49/lb to .60/lb. you notice), and insane price increases on soft drinks and potato chips.  Hamburger spiked to about 5.99/lb for a couple of months, but has dropped back to 4.99- though oddly to me, it is cheaper to now buy premade 80/20 1/3lb frozen burgers than raw hamburger (2lbs premade 8.99).

Red Meat , eggs and heavy whipping cream.

The two pound tube of fatty hamburger 73/27% is a staple item here.   Rib Eye Steaks on occasion; like a pay day.

I tried that burger for a while.  Turns out the extra cost for the 80/20 is worth it in the size of the burger you get left on the grill, not blazed away in a column of smoke.

You all should try Publix also.  See below.  A good number of BOGOs and a $10 off a $50 gas card.  Effective price reduction of 20% on gas, works for me.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.
