General Discussion / Re: Movie Review: Civil War - by Forward Observer
« Last post by Jackalope on Today at 09:44:12 AM »
My wife and I were finally able to seeCivil War yesterday.  We both found the first half of the movie to be somewhat slow and plodding.  The action picked up during the last forty five minutes, and there was a crescendo at the end. As has been noted, there's no indication as to which side we should be rooting for.  However, there are clear depictions of evil, and the raw depravity of war.  If you look beyond the purely entertainment value, you will find some excellent lessons.

One of the takeaways from the film is how chaotic an American Civil War would be.  There's one scene in the film where folks are pinned down by a sniper.  We never find out why the sniper was shooting everyone.  The iconic scene where a soldier (essentially someone in a uniform, could be a militia man, or just someone who likes camo clothing) asks, "What kind of American are you?", again reinforces the chaotic situation.  Essentially, this person becomes judge, jury, and executioner.  I would imagine that old grudges would be settled, and petty crime would be dealt with severely.  The film generates lots of questions and thought experiments.  Would law enforcement exist in such a scenario?  How about the justice system?  If you catch looters, how do you deal with them?  (IMHO, there's not much worse than a thief).  How do people get food?  How do you differentiate between opposing forces?

The film also depicts, probably accidentally, the need to be armed.  Another lesson was don't be a refugee.  Travel during war time is hazardous to your health.  Also, stay out of cities, but rural environments can be just as dangerous.  I'd suggest hunkering down, and staying within your own immediate AO, but that wouldn't make a good movie.

The line, "What kind of American are you?", resonates within me, but for different reasons than in the movie.  Today, we see "Americans" shouting "Death to America", as they protest whatever is the "cause du jour".  American culture has drifted from the original intent of our founding fathers, as the government implements more freedom limiting laws.  We were once the great melting pot; now we're a fractured society.  We've lost the pride in our country, and patriotism is frowned upon by the media and academia.  Could the U.S. devolve into what was depicted in the movie?  I say, "Yes!", and it may be unavoidable.

So, was it a good movie?  If you were looking for an action movie or a popcorn thriller, then the answer would be no.  If you're looking to observe one possible future scenario, then the answer would be yes.  The movie was mildly entertaining, but it also served as an excellent means of projecting possible threats and possibilities.  If you look beyond the purely entertainment value, you will find some valuable lessons.  Whether the movie is mediocre or good is, of course, subjective, but I suggest watching the film with an open mind.  For me, I rate it four out of five stars.

I've found that an amp allows the NCS to usually copy me on the ERIN net.  Otherwise, I'm down in the noise level.  I'm typically running 400-600 watts.  Working DX contests, I've found that firing up the amp usually results in a contact on the first call, without it, I've called for 30-40 minutes and not made contact.  So, there are times when it's a great tool.  It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Well, here I go sticking my nose right where it doesn't belong. I've never been into Amps unless I wanted to beef up a weak 2 meter or 440 rig. Years ago, I did the math on what it takes to get one more S unit on the other guy's radio. It took 3 db (double your power) to get 1/2 an S unit and another 3 db to get a full S unit. If you are running 100 watts, it will take 400 watts to get a 1 S unit increase on the other guy's radio. It will take 1600 watts to get a 2 S unit increase. I'm going to suggest you hunt for something around 500 watts and run it at about 400 watts so it will last a long life. There, I've meddled in your business long enough. :faint:

Is it anyone's guess as to what will happen between now and November or should we count on organized rallies and more of the same looting, arson and violence we saw a couple years ago in the name of free spreach?  There's a lot of chatter about what will happen between now and then from increasingly reliable YouTubers who have stepped up their reporting and investigative teams.  Folks from Survival Dispatch, Mike Glover, and Christian Warrior Training, are echoing reports from three letter agencies that there are credible threats from foreign organizations in the Homeland; (especially places of worship,  Christian churches).  Christian Warrior reports all known attacks on churches, pastors and church goers: shootings, stabbings, and violence are on a big uptick.  MSM is another problem.  If its not reported, how will the general public know it happened and how to prepare for it ?  I guess that's their plan.

My thoughts... it's once again a time to be active in our preps.  The intel is out there if you look, supplies are still readily available, Amazon still delivers, travel is still easy, store shelves are full, water and fuel still flow out of the spicket, pewpews and ammo are abundant... we prepare for when they're not.  Sure, Nothing may come of these threats, but we're all seasoned enough to know what Could happen by November and beyond if the threats go HOT.

Living in a college town, with a relatively high population density,  I'm taking this as seriously as my time and resources will allow.  But still trying to find balance.   And I haven't even mentioned Revelation.

Martin Jue has decided to close shop later this summer.  Hopefully, he'll find buyers for all the companies that he has acquired over the past 50+ years.  Supposedly, they are ceasing production on May 17th.  That's going to leave a mighty big hole in the amateur radio world!

Jackalope, I agree that USA Jews need to wake up and move from Biden to Trump.

Call me crazy but...American minorities are waking up when it comes to Trump vs. Biden. Our MSM is trying their upmost to dis-energize MAGA. Don't believe anything you hear from them instead, do your own investigation and watch folks around you.

Now, will Trump make it to the November 5th election? His VP pick is super important for the following reasons,

> Needs to be someone that can help or take over the role if Trump doesn't make it with a "drain the swamp" attitude and,
> Needs to be able to run in 2028.

Stay tuned,

I think most people look at their historical voting practices more like rooting for their favorite team and their team must win at all costs VS doing what is best for the Country.

I just have to make 2 additional clicks to get here.  Not a big problem when that pops up.

Just wanted to make sure those who handle such things knew about it.  In case it needed correction on that end.  I have no problem with it on this end.

Bottom-line, UP never switched to HTTPS from HTTP. IT DOES NOT matter other than some browsers don't like it. Google as well as spiders, link to UP all the time.

Here is a an explanation...https://www.hostinger.com/tutorials/http-vs-https

Although I have performed a lot of back room computer work, I have never switched a HTTP to a HTTPS address prefix as it requires a newer level of certification. If anybody has the experience to do this here, and I know you, I will give you authorization (keys to the bank) to change.

To get around this on your end, just add the site address to your trusted site addresses.

Hope that helps.
