May 2023 ERIN SOI
« on: April 27, 2023, 09:50:56 AM »
Quote
Be aware, as we move into the summer months, I have changed the Primary and Alternate frequencies for the phone net at 2000E hrs. Digital will remain on 80-meters for now.

The next ERIN net will be Tuesday May 23, 2023, starting at 1900 hrs. eastern with the digital ERIN net. The PACE for that net is as follows,

1) At 1900E hrs. digital net (NCS is usually on frequency at 1850E hrs.) will commence.

Primary         7.110 Mhz USB Contestia 4/250, 1000 on the Waterfall
Alternate       3.588 Mhz USB Contestia 4/250, 1000 on the Waterfall
Contingency  This email thread
Emergency    Text. Do I have your cell phone number?

When the Net Control Station (NCS) calls for check-in's this is the reporting format,

de your call, your call/name/location/W-TFC or No-TFC/ de your call

All traffic (TFC) will be passed via MFSK32. I suggest using the FLmsg ICS-213 or the AmRRON Custom forms.

NCS will convert mode from C-4/250 (Contestia 4/250) to MFSK32 and then instruct check-ins one at a time to pass TFC.

Once TFC is complete, NCS will return mode back to C-4/250 for the wrap up of the QSO.

2) At 2000E hrs. (I am typically on frequency at 1950E hrs.) will commence.

Primary         7.237 Mhz LSB or higher till clear air (New as May 2023)
Alternate       3.909 Mhz LSB or higher till clean air
Contingency  This email thread
Emergency    Text. Do I have your cell phone number?

The above SOI will be used at first, if the interwiz is taken down through Executive Order -- Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions. Then we will develop and share a revised SOI.

73 & God Bless,
Johnymac

Two goor ERIN nets tonight.

1. Digital, a quite reliable way to learnabout 'ground truth' outside of our immediate area, but close enough that it might impact us.  Banking instability was top of the list.

2. The SSB voice net on forty meters ( tonight was the first on forty) went very well. What a good 'tool' being able to discuss current events without needing to rely upon the internet.  Internet is great, I really aopreciate it, but it presents a big target and I appreciate being able to communicate reliably without depending upon commercial/government infrastructure.

Again tonight, I checked into the digital net and sent traffic using my tiny tr(U)SDX QRP rig and Android phone app.  This runs on AA batteries and whatever it takes to recharge the phone.  Having a shirt pocket portable digi-comm station means a lot to me for planning.  I'll use the big rig 100 W every opportuninty, but if all else fails, I have both medium (130 A/H) solar charged battery system for the house and minor (3 to 7 A/H solar for portable systems.  Ths is not counting putting a smaller solar panel on the truck to keep the battery charged for emergency power.

For voice net, this week, I used the big rig. No need to torture JohnyMac with the 3 Watt QRP SSB,  while he is receiving traffic.  haha  :violin:

The move to 40 meters on phone is greatly appreciated.  I could actually copy everyone tonight.

  to all.

Digital we had VA-2, NJ-1, NY-1 PA-1, + relay from FL, and
Phone we had PA-3, VA-2, TN-1, NJ-1, + relay FL.

40 meters was a delight.

Yep. Jakelope. I could hear you just fine. I have a 40 meter Hamstick but its onlt about 12 feet above the ground and it sucks at that location. I used my 160 meter dipole mounted 30 feet up the tower and it always outperforms my 40 meter antenna.

I?m TDY in Maryland, so I brought the CTX-10 with me. I used a 17? collapsible whip with a Wolf River Coil and a ground spike.  It?s the first time I?ve used this particular setup.  I need to do more experimenting with the setup as the swr wouldn?t drop below 8:1. Also need to get a longer coax line. Anyways, I didn?t copy the net.

I visited HRO in Woodbridge, VA, last weekend, and had the opportunity to check out the newest offerings.  The FT-710 looked very nice. Also looked at the LAB599 TX-500 and the Icom IC-705.  I?m thinking that one of those three will be my next radio.

Jackalope -

For use indoors, in a fixed radio shack, the FT-710 is excellent!  I bought one roughly 2 months ago, and the receiver is superb.  Filtering is impressive, able to be tailored to very narrow 50 Hz ) for CW and to whatever passband you want for digital modes as well. However, it's not a portable set and draws a bit over 2 Amps in receive.  For portable, the other two rigs you mentioned do have very good reviews. Please keep us posted on your decision.

---

ERIN net tonight was usable for both digital and voice , but as everyone pointed-out, noisy and quite a bit of fading.  It was even worse on the upper bands, 20 meters had looong, deep fades.  However, the CW sked with Cooter abd his shirt-pocket QRP rig worked quite well.  I did have a software/operator interface failure... but once reset, my traffic passed as normal.

Ps. Incase anyone wonders, no, I am NOT much of a voice operator.  I prefer the pace of a Morse conversation.

Yes PKv it was. Digital sucked.

I am going to move digital to 7.110 Mhz starting next week.

Time to move on to 40 meters for both digital and phone.

I tried to sign in on digital but my program went nuts. I could hear and copy just fine but the instant I tried to transmit, my radio went silent and the program didn't show any outgoing information. Then it locked up and restarting the computer brought everything back up but then the same thing happened. After 4 complete computer restarts, I just gave up. I'll catch you guys on the Phone net at 8.
