Can Ivermectin be used to treat COVID-19 (coronavirus)?

Medically reviewed by Melisa Puckey, BPharm. Last updated on Dec 29, 2020.

Official Answer
by Drugs.com

Ivermectin has been trialled in treating the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19.
An in vitro trial has shown ivermectin reduces the number of cell-associated viral RNA by 99.8 % in 24 hours. An in vitro study is when they study cells in a laboratory and not in a living organism.
More studies are now needed to be done using ivermectin on people or animals to see how well ivermectin works against COVID-19. This is in vivo testing.
Ivermectin is currently a FDA approved medicine for treatment of intestinal worms, Strongyloides stercoralis and Onchocerca volvulus. It has been established as safe for human use.

What is Ivermectin?

Ivermectin is currently used to treat parasite infections such as intestinal worms, lice and mites.
Recently ivermectin has also been studied to treat a range of viruses.

middle part with great details you need to go read skipped

Bottom line

Clinical trials in the laboratory (in vitro) on ivermectin show that ivermectin reduces the number of cell-associated viral RNA by 99.8 % in 24 hours, for the SARS-CoV-2 which is the virus that causes COVID-19.

More studies are needed to see if these positive results will be the same in human testing (in vivo) and whether ivermectin will decrease the symptoms, time for recovery and death rate from COVID-19.

Ivermectin is already a FDA approved medicine for some types of intestinal worms

It is known that ivermectin has a good safety profile at standard dosing levels.

I've read a number of medical reports that indicate Ivermectin is an effective treatment.  It's inexpensive, and it's available at your local Tractor Supply store, or feed store.  We've got some stored away, just in case.  Oh yeah, it's available in an apple flavor and when mixed with applesauce, it's easy to take.

I read a report, and damned if I can find where it was now, that Ivermectin was in use in Central America for Covid.  The study highlighted a doctor that had been using it for slightly over 7000 patients with a 96% success rate.  The study was light on specifics, which makes it somewhat suspect, but I also bought some for my med stocks.

As far as Nemo's article goes the "Ivermectin for animal use should not be used in humans" is most likely a cover for the article so the FDA doesn't get pissed.  .gov is cracking down on vet meds due to AMA pressure.  Vet medicines can, and have for many years, been used to treat humans. Ragnar Benson's, the Survivalists Medicine Chest, though dated, is good read for this sort of thing. Also, or a very least, get a medical drug guide, one with photos of each pill, and compare the photos to the vet meds- and be sure to note any writing on the pill.  If the vet med doesn't match exactly- I wouldn't use it. Whether you do or not is your call.
Additional note, there are a few federal online sources that list "servoce life extensions" for drugs-i.e.: how long their real expiration date is.  A large number run 2-5 years past the listed date. However, don't use doxy or tetracyline past the listed date, as they can turn toxic very quickly.

Personally, I use fish antibiotics when I need those type of things, but only those made at a reputable lab. But then again, I'm a RN.  I'm not sure about Ivermectin, mostly because the dosing info I've found is primarily for horses.  If it were for swine it would be approximately pound for pound for a human- don't know why it works out that way, unless perhaps god is making a point. So still looking for better reference, but I'm more inclined to try it than the vaccine.

What is ivermectin?

Ivermectin is an anti-parasite medication.

Ivermectin is used to treat infections in the body that are caused by certain parasites.

Ivermectin is currently being investigated as a treatment for coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19. The trials so far have shown ivermectin reduces the number of cell-associated viral DNA by 99.8 % in 24 hours. Further studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of this medicine in humans with COVID-19.

Click for further information on using ivermectin to treat COVID-19 and other prevention and investigational treatments.
Important Information

You will need to have a stool exam after taking ivermectin to make sure the infection is gone. Some patients may need to take another dose of ivermectin to treat the infection.

Ivermectin may make you feel dizzy. To lower the chance of feeling dizzy or passing out, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down. Be careful going up and down stairs.
Before taking this medicine

You should not use ivermectin if you are allergic to it.

To make sure ivermectin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

    liver or kidney disease; or

cancer, HIV or AIDS, or other conditions that can weaken your immune system.

It is not known whether ivermectin will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.

Ivermectin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Ivermectin should not be given to a child who weighs less than 33 pounds (15 kg).
How should I take ivermectin?

Never take ivermectin in larger amounts, or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label.

Take ivermectin on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Ivermectin is usually given as a single dose. Take this medicine with a full glass of water.

To effectively treat your infection, you may need to take ivermectin again several months to a year after your first dose.

If you have a weak immune system (caused by disease or by using certain medicine), you may need to take more than one dose of ivermectin. Some people who have a weak immune system need to take this medicine on a regular basis. Follow your doctor's instructions.

To make sure this medicine is working, you may need to provide frequent stool samples.

Store this medicine at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

The consensus on one of the forums that I peruse, is the horse dosage by weight corresponds to humans.  For example, if a 5 oz tube will treat a 1250 lb. horse, then 1 oz would treat a 250 lb. human.  They recommended take one dose on Day 1, and then on Day 3 take another single dose.  Then taking it once a month as a prophylactic measure if you're likely to be exposed to the Chinese Virus.   You can definitely take too much, and it can result in liver damage.  So be responsible, research and determine what is right for YOU.

Relating to Ivermectin, the FDA sent out a warning letter today (3/9) about using the drug for treating Covid-19.
https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/why-you-should-not-use-ivermectin-treat-or-prevent-covid-19?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

While the facts listed are undoubtably true (sic), I can't help but wonder how much this letter has to do with herding people towards one of the vaccines.

The FDA is walking hand in hand with Big Pharma.  They don't want folks to be cured by an inexpensive treatment, because it hurts Big Pharma profits.  Do your research.  There are numerous studies that indicate Ivermectin is an effective treatment for the Chinese Virus.  Big Pharma partially owns most of the U.S. politicians.  The FDA doesn't like Ayurvedic medicine either, natural, herbal solutions to many health issues, again because it hurts Big Pharma profits.   :deadHorse:

Zinc and vitamin D for me

Yep. I've discussed this with my Doctor and he had COVID 19 and took Azithromycin and Steroids and he ended up with just a mild case. If you have type O blood, smoke, Take Vitamin D3, Zinc, and Vitamin C you are very unlikely to catch it. I'm O, I smoke, I take D3, C, and zinc. So far so good. I truly do not trust anything about this Man Made Disease. I also do not trust anything about the many different vaccines.

Just thought I'd share this from The Epoch Times:

Doctors Raise Awareness on Ivermectin Treatment for COVID-19
BY MEILING LEE July 24, 2021 Updated: July 24, 2021

In an effort to help end the pandemic, an international coalition of medical experts is holding worldwide events Saturday to raise awareness about the effectiveness of ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19.

Organizers of the World Ivermectin Day say doctors and supporters of the inexpensive FDA-approved drug will host free online and public events in over a dozen countries.

Two nonprofits—Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care (FLCCC) Alliance and the British Ivermectin Recommendation Development (BIRD) group—who have been campaigning for the off-label use of ivermectin to prevent and treat COVID-19 say the event’s focus is to let more people know that the antiparasitic drug can treat COVID-19, possibly end the pandemic, and help eliminate fear of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus.

“We have an incredibly positive and uplifting message to share: ivermectin treats and prevents COVID and it is the key to unlocking the never-ending cycle of pandemic peaks and personal restrictions and will help restart economies,” Dr. Tess Lawrie, cofounder of the BIRD group said in a press release.

Lawrie is also a co-author of a peer-reviewed meta-analysis study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics that found ivermectin to be effective against COVID-19, the disease caused by the CCP virus. Lawrie and her team concluded with a moderate level of confidence that ivermectin reduced the risk of death by an average of 62 percent, at a 95 percent confidence interval of 0.19-0.73, especially when prescribed early.

FLCCC Alliance also conducted their own review of 18 randomized controlled trials on COVID-19 treatment with ivermectin. They found “large, statistically significant reductions in mortality, time to clinical recovery, and time to viral clearance.” The authors also said that studies on the prevention of COVID-19 reported significantly reduced risks of the disease with regular use of the drug.

Members of the FLCCC Alliance have developed various protocols for the prevention and early treatment of COVID-19,  instead of having patients wait until they develop a severe illness to receive treatment at the hospital. These treatment protocols including one for the management of long COVID are being used globally.

The current standard protocol for COVID-19 positive patients is to isolate at home, avoid dehydration, rest, and take over-the-counter medications for fever, headache, cough, and body pain.

According to updated guidance from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 and who are at high risk of disease progression, are recommended to take a monoclonal antibody if hospitalization or supplemental oxygen is not required.

Despite evidence showing ivermectin may treat all stages of COVID-19 and reduce death and hospitalization as a result of its anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties, the FDA has not approved its use, saying that the drug isn’t an anti-viral. The federal regulator issued a warning that people should not take ivermectin intended for horses as the larger doses may be harmful to humans.

The NIH has not changed its neutral stance on the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19, while the World Health Organization (WHO) does not recommend the use of the drug except in a clinical study. Both organizations cite insufficient data for not making a recommendation.

Unprecedented Censorship
Online discussions of ivermectin have faced an unprecedented level of suppression with doctors claiming that their videos are being taken down or their LinkedIn accounts closed.

Lawrie said she has experienced censorship with her work on ivermectin, claiming that her videos about the drug have been removed and posts censored on social media.

“I have experienced a lot of censorship ever since I started doing work on ivermectin (never before),” Lawrie told The Epoch Times via email. “I have had my post of my published peer-reviewed scientific manuscript removed from LinkedIn.”

She also said that many people have informed her that their accounts would be restricted or censored “if they post the work my company has produced on ivermectin or interviews that I have done.”

LinkedIn did not reply to a request for comment.

Dr. Mobeen Syed, chief executive officer of Drbeen Corp, an online medical education, said YouTube took down three of his videos on ivermectin within 24 hours.

“[Third] book burnt in 24 hours. @Youtube @TeamYouTube continue to burn books,” Syed said on Twitter on July 11. “This video was important to keep people safe who are using ivermectin regardless of what YouTube thinks.”

YouTube did not reply to The Epoch Times inquiry on clarification of which terms or conditions Syed’s videos had violated.

Ivermectin is not the only topic being suppressed or blocked by Big Tech firms. Social media posts about the lab leak theory that the CCP virus escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and information that goes against the narrative about the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine has also been censored.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki suggested at a White House briefing that people should be banned from all social media platforms if they post misinformation online about COVID-19 vaccines, alleging that this type of information was “leading to people not taking the vaccine.” Psaki’s suggestion has drawn widespread condemnation.

Regardless of the suppression of ivermectin around the world, people have found unique ways to get the information out. Social media posts of lawn signs have appeared in Manitoba, Canada with a simple message that reads, “Ivermectin treats COVID-19” along with the FLCCC website listed.

Members of the FLCCC Alliance said in a reply to an email that they would continue their mission in getting ivermectin approved for COVID-19 despite the censorship.

“Thank you for your email. Abandoning our mission is not [an] option. Yes, it has been hell. But as Winston Churchill once said, ‘If you’re going through hell, keep going.’ So if we need to leave you here, we understand. But we’ll march on. Your life matters that much,” the nonprofit said earlier this month.

Also, the article included a link to 18 studies involving Ivermectin https://journals.lww.com/americantherapeutics/Fulltext/2021/06000/Review_of_the_Emerging_Evidence_Demonstrating_the.4.aspx

I have a 70+ friend who takes 1/4 tsp of Ivermectin once a week as a preventative for the Chinese Virus. She also takes vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C, and an adult aspirin each day.

MrsMac and I do similar daily minus the Ivermectin weekly. My fiend and I have both been exposed to people with Covid and yet we have not contracted the virus. Who knows.
