Scary stuff.

Quote
Despite denials from all the involved companies, it looks like someone was able to take down Google, the New York Times and Amazon. In what could be the largest ever attack in the history of the internet, someone or something caused two of the largest internet giants in the world to go dark.

Two days ago, something made the entire Google backbone go down. Everything from Gmail to YouTube, and even the companies infamous Search applications, all went down for around 5 minutes.  Now today, it looks like the same thing is happening to Amazon.

Late this afternoon the Amazon network went down for over 30 minutes. While this may not seem like a huge amount of time, it has huge implications that could affect everyone.

Who is responsible?

A group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army last Thursday launched a cyber-attack that affected the websites of The Washington Post, Time and CNN, among others. While some are speculating that these latest attacks could be related, I believe it would take someone with a lot more knowledge to be able to shut down the entire Google and Amazon networks.

Over the last year, the internet has come under an increasing amount of very sophisticated cyber attacks. Earlier this year, we reported on an attack that slowed the entire internet down for days, and affected companies like Netflix, CloudFlare and Google. The attack exposed major vulnerabilities in the Internet?s core infrastructure.

The Government Launches Preemptive Attacks

Earlier this year, the Obama administration concluded a secret legal review of the administration?s new cyber war guidelines. The guidelines gave the President the power to order pre-emptive cyber strikes to protect national security interests.

With this in mind, today?s news is especially troubling. It seems we may be entering a new era in warfare ? one that could redefine how we live and how we do just about everything.

Everything from banking systems to our critical infrastructure could be affected by these types of cyber-attacks.

Communication Threats

Our modern communication infrastructure is incredibly reliant on the grid; it?s also incredibly vulnerable to cyber-attacks. The attack that happened earlier this year caused widespread internet congestion, and jammed critical infrastructure around the world. The attack showed how quickly, and easily, hackers could cripple our communication systems.

Power Grid Threats

Another area of major concern is our entire power grid, which is extremely vulnerable to attacks from terrorists, hackers and rogue nations. If hackers were to target the grid, it could literally shut things down by causing widespread blackouts for weeks, maybe even months.

Banking Systems

While most people in this country still live under the illusion that their money?s secure in the banks, the fact is, our banking systems are probably one of the most vulnerable sectors when it comes to cyber-attacks.

Back in March, customers of Chase Bank woke up to find their accounts had been wiped out. Luckily the ?glitch? only lasted for a couple of hours, and customers eventually had their bank balances restored.

Something to Watch?

This is definitely something to watch, and something that could have widespread repercussions. Our current infrastructure is becoming increasingly dependent on the internet, and should someone be able to take down the Internet?s core infrastructure you would see panic sweep across the country.

One of the 'advantages' to being a poor s.o.b., not having a bunch of money possibly stuck in a bank. ;D
