Tampa Area new to the group
« on: June 24, 2014, 12:49:49 AM »
Hello I’m new to this site and just wanted to introduce myself. I live near Tampa Florida. I’m a former Marine  :DrillSgt: and carry my AARP card…lol It sucks getting older. I started prepping in November of 2013, so I have a lot of catching up to do. I included a list of what I have purchased since November. If I don't have yet I put NEED. Number after item is how many I have. Needless to say Mags and Ammo,  not telling how much…lol…can always use more. I’ve had to slow down a little on buying items since wife would like property soon. Told her it would be good for the boy and I to have a place to camp, shoot and use 4 wheelers, she agreed. We will get a used motorhome to start staying on the property, then go from there. This will be are go to place. I want it to be no more than 3 - 5 hour drive from our home. The cargo container will be our storage area on Property. I will hide ammo and weapons elsewhere on property. My list is long but I don’t plan on carrying everything, most will be at property. We will each have a hand gun, a Ruger 10/22 and one shotgun, still not sure if I should carry AR 15 while bugging out. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Would like to meet others near me.

I'd love to give you my take on your list but I'd need to know the scenario(s) you are concerned about.
Not sure? make that prep priority #1 it would be like calling for fire on a six digit coordinate, your going to buy stuff you don't need.

Quite the list you have there. It sounds like you plan to bug out to your outlying property and then bunker down there. Do you have any food stores and seed banks? Especially food for your INCH bag, seeing as you plan to bug out so far from your current location. A 5 hour drive would take a few days on foot. But that's just my 2 cents. Welcome in.
I'd rather be crazy than dead.

Welcome Older Marine!

A great group of men & women here on this site.

May I suggest you check out the archives to start. Then formulate your questions if any, after you do that. There three to four years worth of incredible stuff filed away here.

On another note: The forum would be very interested to hear why a mature Old Marine decided in 2013 it was time to start prepping. I think we could all learn something from your "awakening."

WELCOME!

Thanks for the responces. Not sure why I posted list of supplies, guess after spending hours putting it together I wanted to share. That’s not even a complete list..lol.. Still looking for the right property. We would love to move to mountains, however, jobs are here and as one gets older it’s more difficult to get good employment. Money runs everything. I would like the property to be as close as possible, but also further out of Tampa and away from people. Ideally no more than 3 hour drive. This is going to become a second/retirement/BOL home. If we have any idea something might be going on were gone. Not waiting till last minute. So I hope to be able to drive to BOL. If not I have a motorcycle on it's trailer and I will be able to reach that way. Worst case we’re walking. Would like to slowly meet other like minded people to from a well-built group.

P.S. to form a well-built group. I joined Unchained Preppers after reading tons of their posts. I really like how everyone seems to have manors and respect other opinions.

Pocket Chain saw or cable saw?

 couldn't recommend more against it. It's one of those items you'd use in a survival scenario and the amount of energy you spend on using them is more then you'll be able to afford. This works effortlessly. : http://www.bahco.com/english/products/laplander_1.html

I can tell that you've been doing some good research though!

You should have said that instead of "former Marine," because only a Marine would think we were polite and well mannered!

Welcome aboard, I've put a note into my failing brain to properly respond when I'm in front of a full keyboard but for now I am also interested to know what you are prepping for and how you intend to counter the perceived threat.

Great follow-up Older Marine. Your list is a great start and every successful journey starts with good direction (lists). Lists keep you on target.  ;)

Concerning your comment OM, "manors and respect other opinions." That is in main part to the quality of folks we have here at UP. Whether you follow Wicca or a Christianity or are a Progressive or a Libertarian we are all preppers who want Freedom Through Self-Reliance.

Burt, some great links man! I am thinking that you may want to do a "copy & paste" on the gear blog of those links.

Great Links Burt!!! I really like the battery link. I have a Folding Fiskars wood saw 14”. I spend a lot of time researching gear, but I have still bought a lot of JUNK. We go camping and hiking at Green Swamp to test our gear. It's amazing what you learn using your equipment. Also, I've learned I can't do what I was able to do 30 years ago. The interesting thing is my mind doesn't realize that until I try   :violin:. I've gotten more great information from the members of UP then any other site. I'm glad I joined!
