Quote
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) ? We have a winter storm potential this weekend -- and significant amounts of snow are possible.

We've been watching the last several day's worths of computer models pushing out dizzying amounts of snow -- or sometimes none at all!

The variation between models in terms of snow totals is large -- some maps show 20 inches, while some show none. I'm not focusing on any one particular snow map right now.

.   .   .

HOW MUCH SNOW COULD FALL:

On the high end, 12? to 18,? especially near mountains. A foot could be very doable near mountains.
Chance of at least 1? of snow: 75%
Chance of at least 4? of snow: 50%
Chance of at least 12?: 20% and higher for mountains

As the potential Winter Storm nears, our forecast will become more detailed and as precise as possible, where possible.

Only supposed to be ~6" here, probably going to go south of us and up the coast. The high here on Saturday is supposed to be a blazing 7 degrees, I'm more worried about the cold than the snow.

Many around here freak out when the prediction is 3-6.

When I was a younger man, I had the great fortune to have worked a couple of years in the timber industry, in TALL western mountains just south of the Canadian border. Here in The South, I do smile when I see the FEAR on faces at the mere mention of SNOW (seen as the FIFTH horseman of the Apocalypse ).  OTOH, we are the only family we know personally in this area, who have and use snow tires and keep a 'get home' kit in the cars.

You're near the bay.  The warm water keeps the air warmer and you miss much of it.  I'm in the could be 15+ mountains or 3-4 not there.  Local news says couple days away yet so he cannot say.

Wife says its been enough already.  I'm teasing her for the 20+.  She does not like me much.

Always look at snow as a friend.     It transforms the scenery with beauty.  (Also hides that mess you hadn't got around to cleaning up yet)    It provides moisture for the earth.  It makes chilling your drinks a breeze.   Fun to play in (with correct clothing and gear).   Forces you to get that exercise needed via snow shovel.
And most of ALL, when it gets deeper than most people are accustomed to:  Best Excuse Ever to stay home, enjoy the woodstove, catch up on reading, maybe bake some bread, etc, etc, etc...   :-)

My perspective comes from once living in Alaska, now near a SW city that occasionally competes with upstate New York for snow depths.

I lived in Watertown NY for 3 years (Snowtown USA), and spent a whole lot of time living out in the snow and cold. Now I'm a "Critical" state employee, I don't get snow days, so when it's going to be bad I sometimes have to give myself 1 1/2 hours to make a normal 35-minute drive. Spend the night clearing snow, which takes priority over everything else, then try to get home on roads that our state just can't seem to figure out how to clear and maintain, then clean up the snow at my house and my elderly neighbors'. Then, and only then, might I get a couple hours to relax before going to bed. So no, I do not like snow and cold. I've had frostbite numerous times, hypothermia twice, once where I was nearly comatose. When it's 100 degrees and humid, I slow down and drink plenty of water, but I'm not going to die just by being outside. Last year's 43" storm almost killed us, we were clearing snow 12 hours a day for a week. Snow sucks, and you're not going to change my mind.

If it could be 70 degrees and snow, I'd be perfectly happy. I enjoy snow the first couple times each year, then it's just work. By March, I'm ready to use napalm to clear the driveways.

LOL.   Sucks to be frostbitten, common ground on that.   And I've been hypothermic to the degree you describe once, an interesting experience, perhaps gave a sneak preview to freezing to death.    Heck of a lot better than lots of other ways we must all deal with since survival rate drops to zero given enough time...

Spending all waking moments dealing with snow has only happened a few times for me.   Like living in a tunnel, everything piled so high.    But I'm still OK with that as it is the exception not rule.
Looking at the bright side, I suppose t also helps keep the riff-raff out.    :-)

I can do without snow, yet dont go so far as hating it. Many recreational activities that I enjoy involve cold and snow (ice climbing, winter mountaineering), I just prefer to have it within driving distance, not on top of me here. One benefit around here is that most of the area gets their milk and bread (even if they never consume that stuff normally) and go into hibernation. A forecast of 1-3" gets you a run on markets/convenience stores. 6-8" or more bumps that up to a run on Liquor stores too.

I love the snowpacalypse forecasts.  Everyone stays home bunkered in and in most cases we end up with a very anti climactic storm.  As long as we dont get a big wind event along with the snow or temps that lead to a ton of rain/ice build up along with the snow we generally make out fine. Those are the conditions that lead to tons of downed trees and power loss in the area. It is a benefit to have a good generator around here in SE New England.

I'm as ready as I can get. Loaded up on Ethenol Free Gas, Both vehicles fully gassed up. Plenty of food to eat. Generator is all set to go if I need it. Radios are all set up and working and plenty of spares for backups.

Was -13 on the drive home, but the temp rocketed up to -8 when I got home. Going to be a snowy night, but at least it's going to warm up, should be around freezing by the time I come home tomorrow. We have a bunch of people out sick at work, and it's a holiday so there's a good chance I'll spend most of my time in the machine running the brush. It's really tough, the stereo in the cab doesn't even have Bluetooth!

The volcano was amazing, blew an ash plume up to 65,000 feet, and was heard in Alaska. Knocked out the internet to Tonga, wondering if there are any Hams there who might be giving updates or passing traffic on HF.

Am ice fishing in Baudette Minnesota this week. Forecast is a blizzard tomorrow, 2-5" of snow and gusts to 55 mph. Wednesday forecast is a high of -4 and a low of -25. Won't have to worry about keeping the beer cold. Thursday is a high of -4 and a low of -12.

Point 1, you crazy for being out in that voluntarily.

Point 2, keep the beer warm so it won't go solid on you.  Beer is not good to chew and not good slushies.

Here is our chariot and we dress for the weather. We fish in a heated ice house.
Will say the ride back to the lodge was interesting. Lots of stops to clear the windshield.
The winds were not that bad, only into the 30's.
