Slight concern.
« on: August 11, 2013, 06:06:19 AM »
Was preaching to a resident on my property about SHTF.

He brought up a concern that I didn't even think about figured I'd get you guys opinions.

SHTF, initial outbreak or breakdown. Government systems stop running. Specifically garbage. At this point it's limbo time for the unprepared. Garbage piles up. Not only bringing disease but rats. Rats bring snakes.

Everyone got a snake kit?

Also, what's your carry for snakes? Mines the judge.

I don't mind the snakes. I use to have two twelve foot pythons. I think rats suck though. :gunner:

I foresee that as a problem in the burbs and cities near wood-lines.  I'm deep in the burbs (but plan to be long gone before the food web has time to change)

But an increase in animal pests is one of the reasons for shotguns and 22LR.

On a funny note me and some friends really make fun the judges... one of us admitted to having to recommend a judge to someone because of snakes around their property.

Dealing with trash is another huge question that most people don't think about... If it's long enough the trash pile will be a prime hunting ground for some meat to spice up the rice and beans!

My brother has snake loads in the first two chambers of the cylinders of his .44 spl just for this issue when up at the property. Me I don't worry about it as I have only seen one rattler in the seven years at the BOL. It was maybe 14" long but coiled for a fight.  :hiding: I did not kill it but I did play with it using a long stick though.

In my current AO there is more problems with the damn raccoons than snakes this time of year. I went outside Thursday night and their was a pose of them trying to get my garbage can lid off. I grabbed a spade and killed one with one blow to the head. The others scattered so I went after them too. One actually had the balls to charge me with teeth blaring and hissing like a cat. Missed him with the spade though.

As I was blocking their exit they eventually jumped into the Sakonnet River that my house rest on the shore of. Went back and picked up dead Miss Raccoon and slung her into the Sakonnet for the crabs and lobster to nibble on.

I only mention this because of rabies will also be more prevalent post SHTF. Although none of these raccoons were rabid, I have shot some rabid ones along with skunks in my neighborhood. My liberal neighbors usually come and knock on my door asking me to shoot them when identified as such.

As far as I know antivenoms are specific for each species, they have short expiration dates, and they are expensive as fuck.

Even if you had the antivenom and the victim could be transported real fast to receive it, is highly probable you'll need to perform surgery in the affected area to fix compartment syndrome or remove necrotic tissue.

Sadly in that case I think the best solution is to not get bitten.

Actually, depending on the situation, I could see this being a "big" concern.  The longer people are in a specific location the more garbage or waste product that there is going to be.  It could attract all sorts of beasts including two legged ones.  I'm thinking of those mentioned above, as well as, packs of dogs.

Another consideration is how you get rid of whatever trash that you may create.  If you are at a BOL the way that you dispose of it can identify that you are in the vicinity to anyone who is looking, from the ground or the air.  If you are on foot or traveling it can be used to track you if you are unaware that you are being followed and do not dispose of it properly by burying it or carrying it with you.

At the cabin we burn all burnable trash. Vegetable matter goes into the compost. Cans get crushed in a "can crusher." Because of this, my wife and I typically end up with one white kitchen trash bag about every 2 weeks. In a TEOTWAWKI situation, I can only assume we will end up with a small dump on our property like they did in time past.

During my backpacking years, we burnt our burnable trash and buried our not burnable trash away from the trail.

Good subject line...

The good thing after SHTF will be that you'll reduce the amount of trash you produce drastically because use and throw away products won't be available anymore :D

A lot of good thinking is being done in here!

I'm going to add to what Currahee is saying by mentioning that those of us who don't own a silencer should own a 1000fps pellet gun. Believe they will work on rats.

Rats and Snakes= protein

Trash fires= bad OPSEC

I've been meaning to build a 55g gasifier for burning trash so I don't have a stinky ol' trash fire giving me away. Plus I hate the smell anyhow but the real issue for me is flies not rats.

A Pellet rifle is a great addition to anybodies armory.

My brother has one with a scope mounted on it. He opens his slider about 4" and sits there waiting for skunks, squirrels and raccoons to walk past. His dog Molsen Lite (Dachshund) sits there and when Stockpile77 shoots a squirrel Molsen runs out and finishes the critter. Or I should he thinks he does as most are already dead.

Can you elaborate on that Jeremy? Up by me, there isn't a whole lot of poisonous snakes I need to worry about, so never thought about a snake bite kit.
