Opinions on a Red Dot Sight
« on: September 05, 2011, 09:40:22 PM »
I am looking for a quality red dot sight to attach to my AR carry handle. This optic will serve in the event I need accurate precision fire. Something that could be used at 300 meters but also not a bad idea for closer engagements (yes, I am working to be good with the irons). Something like an Aimpoint or Eotech is not in my budget. Recommendations?

the only sight I have any experience with is EOTech. most say that it's no good past 100 yds. but I suppose that depends one what kind of accuracy you're expecting.

if you simply want to put a human down, body mass hits, an unmagnified EOTech will serve you well out to 300 yds. but if you're looking for MOA groups at that distance, EOTech is not what you want. for the money, I think it's the best you can buy. from what I hear, Aimpoint makes a quality product as well, but I've never used on so I can't comment on it.

as far as I know, Trijicon manufactures the most popular magnified optic but they are far more pricey than the previous two options. plus ACOG is not holographic, it's glowing tritium, like night sights. that, in and of itself, has it's ups and it's downs.

I have never tried either of these two brands, but I have heard nothing but good things about them.

I've been impressed with my Bushnell TRS-25.  Not sure how you'll get it attached to the carry handle, but I'm sure there's a way.

I have one of the Vortex Strike Fires on my AR, almost a year now and not one issue.

What kind of range can you get with one of those?

The following is just my ignorant, one sided opinion.

If you want a red dot sight, as far as I'm concerned, the only option is an aimpoint. Eotechs are nice, and some people really like the reticle, they even have one with bullet drop, but they are far more failure prone, and the battery life sucks in comparison.  I have personally seen eotechs fail, and once was not under what I would consider hard use. We've all seen the daniel defense torture test video by now, the aimpoint gets blown up, has it's glass crack, and still maintains zero, only dropping it out of a helicopter makes it lose zero. They also have a battery life measured in years of constant on, they are at the point now where you replace the battery almost as often as you need new tritium in night sights.   Yes, they are more expensive, especially when you consider that they often require a +/- $100 mount for an AR or similar rifle with a high height over bore, where as eotechs do not. The new aimpoint pro is around $400, including a mount, and the micro r1 (silver version of the h1) can still be had for around $350.

My way of thinking in general with this kind of stuff is that I'm too poor to buy cheaper stuff. If I buy cheap stuff, it will fail on me more often than not, and I'll end up buying the more expensive thing anyway. I have boxes full of cheap gear, optics, and parts that cost me far over the long road.

It's better to have it and not need it ...

i make smiley faces at 100 yards. the most i have taken my AR out to is 300 yards and that is cause i could'nt find a longer range ::)

i can hit a paper plate size target all day long at 300 yards with that scope. but i am trained with it.  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

if yo wanna go the mini glass route. i would get a 2.5-4X power scope. its what i use and i feel it is a battle scope.

I would definitely recommend if you are looking more at long range use for your rifle to go with a low power scope.  Many issues have already been brought up by previous posters, i.e. batteries, durability.  About the best thing a red dot has going for it is the ability to transition from close to medium range targets pretty effectively.  I personally like my irons and would only use an optic if it were under certain situations.  Say I would have a scope to mount to the side of my AK in case I wanted to get "closer" from farther.  Other than that... irons up!

In conclusion:

Irons or Scope.

Red dot only if you're rich and have stocked up on batteries.  Oh and if you aren't worried about an EMP...

EOtech not good past 100 eh?

My Bro shoots his with 62 grainers out to 250 yards all day long.

Mrs Tremain has a Vortex hanging off her SKS. She can cut the one inch orange dot out of a target with 10 rounds.

EO or AP.

It stands to reason that when credible, vetted people are on either side of an issue, neither side is either entirely correct nor incorrect.

So, I suppose my real recommendation is: Don't waste your money on shitty Chinese optics.
