I need an all steel container

Im looking for an all stainless steel water bottle. Theres a million with a plastic lid. I need an all metal one. No rubber seals no plastic. If it has a really wide mouth thats even better. Any ideas where i might find this? I think theres old surplus ones but im not sure what they are called.

To explain my need. For example when i go to a water source and fill up my bottle and put it in my pack for later boiling. The plastic cap is now tainted and i cant heat it to sanitize it. So i kinda cant sanitize water and then travel with it. I guess i could use soap or alchol wipes. That should work. But id really prefer an all steel container. I realize it wont seal 100%. Thats acceptable. If it is a straight wall with an equally wide top thats even better. Kinda like a tall mason jar.

I've never seen any such animal.  I just went with a Klean Kanteen Wide-Mouth, and rinse the lid with the boiled water.

I have; pre-Vietnam war, GI water canteen. When standing straight up, like in a canvas canteen holder they do not leak. Laid on their side they leaked a few drops per hour.

Keep in mind if you use one of the steel bottles using rubber or plastic seals; just use a piece of saran wrap to separate the two. Throw away the small square of Saran wrap when done and apply a new piece as needed.

Ya ive got one of those GI canteens. Mine is the all metal one with the 2 piece design. It actually leaks at that center seam and i dislike the shape and lid size. Ive seen the canteen before somewhere in a video. If i find it ill link it.

That is a Guyot brand bottle (that has been blackened from soot).  That model is no longer made.  Also, its lid was plastic.  John Cambell ("desertsurvivalist" channel) did a review of the Guyot bottle several years ago >>>

The closest thing to it on the market now is the Klean Kanteen Wide-Mouth that I mentioned earlier.  One of those 16 oz. SS cups will also fit on the bottom of the 40 oz. KK bottle.  If you want a KK bottle I suggest buying it straight from the Klean Kanteen website  http://www.kleankanteen.com/products/wide/klean-kanteen-wide.php   ...there seems to be an inferior counterfeit being sold on amazon.

As far as a second container. Thats nice but im putting together an ultra light "Urban Battle Bag" which isnt meant to sustain you but if need be youve got something to give you some help. Im going to boil water with a plastic lid on loosely and see if it melts. If not ill then crank it tight and let it cool. If the seal survives ill go with that. Ive got a few of these containers one can be a test dummy. I need to know the limitations.

I've been racking my brain.. I don't recall having ever seen a stainless steel container that had a metal cap.

Maybe it is because a cap that sealed water tight without a seal would seize tight if you heated the container?

How about washing out a solvent can?

far from an expert but here are my thoughts...

Consider the following:
- The type of pack/bag you will be carrying

-  The likely methods of obtaining water
Since we are talking urban this could be anything from turning on a tap, patching it from a gutter spout or collecting from puddles.  You will be more likely to get nasty chemicals and haz materials from the city.  Just think of the ugly slick you see in the water puddling on the parking lots every time it rains.

Honestly with urban you are probably wanna do more chemical or "heatless" filtering due to many factors.  How far can the smell of smoke travel?  Now think of in an urban setting when someone smells smoke.  You may draw unwanted attention to yourself.  Also, if you are using a smokeless fuel source like a gas, you now have added a gas canister to your kit = more weight/bulk.  You also now have a potential fire hazard that could really wrench your plans should something go wrong. 

The tablets work good but as stated they take time to be completely effective.  I would definitely recommend getting a Life Straw, or two!  It would probably help you out with the dilemma of drinkable water in a SHTF scenario.

@walker, its my understanding theres a recommended time for water to remain at any given temp. to kill all bacteria. For example if you could instantly make the water 150 deg. and then drop it in ice water after 2 seconds that water would not be safe to drink. They say bring it to a boil so you know it has been above (my understanding was 160 deg.) for the required amount of time. Bringing it to a boil and then cutting the fuel would seem like a fuel saver over say sitting at 150 deg. For 10 minutes.

Thanks OONW for mentioning chemical pollutants, especially when it comes to gathering water in an urban area.  However, I would point out that the Lifestraw does absolutely nothing for chemical pollutants, it even says so in its own description:

...Does not filter chemicals, salt, viruses, heavy metals, taste.

I bought some of the Seychelle Advanced Filters.  It can be used with or without the iodinated resin attachment.  Seychelle had not yet made their Radiological Filter at the time I made my purchase... I would have probably bought those instead.

 @OONW Your right urban limits my safe water sources. I wouldnt touch a puddle unless it had recently rained really hard and wasnt an oily parkinglot or something.  This kit also has some food and a camelbak full of good water. If i have to start boiling water it means something went totally wrong. Kind of like if a fighter pilot is hiding in the bushes behind enemy lines holding his fold up single shot. I do also keep a small charcoal filter straw in there thats good for 10 gal. or more. This kits a day mission type of deal. Im merely carrying the 5 C's for the worst case.

I know iodine tastes bad, that's the reason I mentioned the attachment can be removed if you have another way to kill the microbes. The point is that the Seychelle does a good job removing chemical pollutants.
