Often forgotten gear.

So, I've been reading/watching quite a bit on peoples racks and shit as of late. And I have noticed, lots of people don't have some common things like gloves (I consider them vital), a bandanna (can be used for thousands of things), and something I consider VERY important, chapstick.


Anyone else have other gear that is important that many people don't carry?

Forgot to add, Eye protection. Can't shoot when you can't see.

+1 on the gloves and bandana. I went heavy on the gloves in my current BOB configuration. 1pr standard Mechanix, 1pr leather, 1pr military wool. and 2 ODgreen bandanas.

one thing I'm lacking right now is a good stainless water bottle/container. after watching a shitload of this wildernessoutfitters guy's videos (Pathfinder School) I realize that this is a must. of course I have a standard mess kit, which one side of it can be used as a pan for frying or even boiling water, but it's got alot of disadvantages such as: can't use it to make char-cloth, and it's fluid capacity can't be more than about 10-12 ounces vs. the common 32-40-60 ounce stainless water bottles.

another thing is a good solid fire-tin. not just a magnesium striker, but also a small tinder bundle and something like char-cloth. something that you KNOW will ignite in any weather. have everything you need put together in one little compact container. of course, if circumstances permit, it'd be best to just use your trusty cigarette lighter.. but this is emergency preparedness, right?

Hey NOLA

Look up a guy on youtube called Africanbushcraft. He goes over SADF gear and includes the mess tin they have which is similar to the old British kit. He says is can be used as an oven. Perhaps it can be used to make charcloth as well.

Good stuff. I have a flint rod in all my packs and on my chest rig. Also usually have a lighter on me anyway, but I have a few in my kits.


I rocks some esbit blocks to help with fire starting too.

I had a ziplock bag with around 7 bic lighters. Recently strong winds took the power out in my neck of the woods for a couple square miles. I guess Mr. Murphy ran off with them but I usually walk around the house in the middle of the night w/o turning on lights so I have good night vision.

BTW: The power being knocked out really exposed me to how dark the city can get. The part in the book "Patriots" where the couple try to bug out from Chicago and get ambushed immediately came to mind as a really possiblity. I couldnt even see a fallen oak tree the size of a house blocking a street until I was about to drive into it.

Attack Rack V2 with 4 Euro Com Block Magazine's Primary in the Maadi is a Korean clone of a Chinese drum.
I have an Eagle industries drop leg for the PT92AF, Camel Back Gloves, A condor gator neck ( it's real thin as it doesn't get to cold round here ) DPM British camo are my go to pants but I like khaki's better  :) I run an ACU ACS shirt most of the time I wear the armor, I can sport my patches and an American Flag as well.  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
My Danner Boots, or my Oakley's ( I don't tend to messing up my oakley's to often though. ) I also have a Camel bak 2 liter that I sport. Ear pro is electronic runs on 2AA for 300+ hours made by howard lieght or something like that. I carry my gerber multi tool on my chest Kabar on my hip. My Ruger Police in the small of my back preferably hidden. A zippo and a bic as well as a pencil and a pen. My little " Riteintherain " notepad. I carry a Benchmade in my pocket clipped on.
I'm pretty sure I've forgotten something, I don't really want to go through my kit right now and find out. lol

It's ok, Its light and comfortable as all get out. I can move around quite a bit. Nothing gets hung up to bad.You know how I am about fighting then flighting.  :))

OK, now that that is done I have to agree completely with whats been said so far.  Eye protection is very important as well as hearing protection.  As PatriotNurse has said before it is always good to have ear plugs stocked up because if you have a lot of people packed into a small living space it may be difficult to sleep without them.  Also will save your hearing in the long run when shooting so I don't know why some damn idiots think they are alright going to the range without any!  Also something that people dont talk about a whole lot is the bare essentials, sock and underwear!  Especially if you are relying on the shoe leather express for transportation you will go through socks pretty quick.  Getting a small sewing kit and learning how to make your own repairs is good too.

I forget shit all the time..

One of the most important things to do is to shake out your gear at the end of every trip. Pitch the shit that doesn't get used and add the things you didn't have then pack your bag back up. It will make it easier to load up for the next trip and you will be able to grab your bag and go if need be.

On a side note I don't have a dedicated BOB, I have my backpacking pack that stays loaded and updated per seasion for backpacking and right next to it is my 'add to' bag that has MREs, ammo and CLP in it.
