Trash Can Faraday Cage
« on: November 07, 2016, 10:12:50 AM »
I finished my trash can Farady cage yesterday. Lined a 30 gallon galvanized metal trash can with cardboard as has been shown on Youtube a hundred times before.

Put my cell phone in the can, closed it and it would not ring. Put a playing radio in it and the radio played until I closed the lid and no more radio.

I put most of my unused electronics in the can along with radios last night. I am also going to buy some Faraday bags which I will wrap all of my electronics with for extra protection.

Based on tomorrows election and the Russians stepping up their offense/defensive position, I truly think the next 6 months will be the most dangerous period since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I know, I know,  :tinfoil: hat central here.

Well done Johny, it's like insurance.  If you never need it, you aren't out a lot of time or money.  However, if anything happens, then that equipment will be worth it weight in gold.  If you want to be extra sure, you can buy aluminum tape to put around the lid, but it's kind of a one time deal, and you have to re-do it every time you open the lid.

Very cool Jmac. I've been wanting to try this.  Found out recently that one of my clients specialises in custom Faraday cages, going to do my best to cosy up to him. Also discovered that one of my clients is a huge munitions manufacturer...so far they've denied my requests to "inspect" the facility :'(

Here's an idea. If you have a metal tool box remove the handle and seal the box holes and the lid to the bottom with conductive tape.

Great if you have odd size or large radio or a lot of equipment to protect.

Another option would be a job site boxes that Tractor Supply carries.  They are pricey, but they are very heavy duty.  I've been considering picking one up to store some equipment in another building.  They're nice because that would provide both EMP protection and theft protection, but they're heavy.  Here's the one that I've been looking at: http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/delta-chest-tool-box-48-in?cm_vc=-10005

You could put a small generator in there maybe even a flat screen TV.
