I cant upload the picture because my desktop died. But id like to see other peoples ideas. If you had to take only 10 items into the woods, desert, mountains (wherever you are), to attempt to survive for an unknown amount of time, what would you take? Lets assume the hills arent crawling with wolves post SHTF style. You can exclude any sidearms for bears etc from your 10. I want you to be specific to your AO. Also things like knife and sheath or rifle and ammo or fire starting kit all count as 1 item.
My list:
1) Knife, 5" fixed blade
2) altoid can with ferral rod, lighter, magnifyingglass and dryer lint.
3) big roll of 91lb test cordage.
4) Multi-tool
5) MSR seagull pot
6) Stainless steel canteen
7) Ruger 10-22 stainless with synthetic stock and ammo
8 ) Large poncho with tie points to double as cover
9) Ibuprofen
10) small bastard mill file.

3) Leatherman tool.
4) My favorite fixed blade.
5) Tarp.
6) Net hammock.
7) Poncho.
8.) Camelback with filter.

10) My telescoping fish rod.
Now, I suppose given your rules I could count a few things here as one item, but I can't stress enough the importance of having a good blade. I ALWAYS carry a blade with me, sometimes two, because to be honest I don't see a folding knife or multi-tool as a practical defense weapon. When you need a knife you need it and nothing says "ready" like a fixed blade. And I don't need no fancy cooking equipment. :cowboy:

I can make fire with a piece of flint (You can find pretty much anywhere) and the steel hatchet/hawk.
Woke up at 3:15A to take a leak and thought what was I thinking! I decided to shine the chick and get a cur!

@WW- yeah the hatchets really nice. If im in a cooler climate id ditch the Ibuprofen for one. I just get feverish in the heat out here when im huffin it. I hate the heat.. I was born for freezing conditions.

Not to sidetrack the thread, because this kind of ties in. But has anyone else noticed that there are a lot of homeless people on the move here lately. Yesterday, while on my way to work the part time job I'm doing to help while I get this business set up and going, I saw a homeless guy making his way down US1 carrying his backpack. I wondered what he had in it. It seemed to be filled to the brim and he stopped to adjust it on his back, so I'm thinking he had it overweight.

I have noticed some seemingly homeless people with external frame packs way to far from the mtn to explain it. People are just goin for it. Perhaps they came here from out of state to hop on the CA welfare gravy train.
But as i type that i also remember how ive seriously considrred just moving out of state and pitching a tent to try and get established. Matter of fact im planning on a 5 dayer in Utah to scope out Utah. Im going to rent a car, go pitch my tent, and see what there is to see, urban and woods. I just so happened to of planned it for July 4th. First day on freeish land.

It's been a winning strategy so far!
Some dudes are disaster prone, some people aren't... what makes the difference?
I have spent my professional career chasing after a safety bonus which I only missed out on one of the past 15 years and as I get older I am more and more inclined to keep from getting hurt.
When I move around sharp objects I move deliberate and easy, the other day we were working in a drop ceiling and everyone including myself found something sharp to bang into. I had mentioned before we got started that there was all kinds of sharp shit up there and pointed all of it out to the guys.. Every one could have gotten a stitch or two but me because I am slow and easy. How hard to you want to force yourself into a blade?
Furthermore it is your AO, you should know what you can put on a cut, bruise or chafed ball.
Just like no one has put coffee, tea or punch on their list, you've only got ten slots and some shit just gets pushed out for more important things.
Don't feel like I am chastising you, you made a great observation one that made me think hard about why I chose not to include my first aid kit. Hell my kitchen spices, water tabs and fire kit all live in the first aid kit anyhow.. I could have just put it on the list.

You might as well change #10 to a lamp with a genie in it! Also, unless you're planning to use the sleeping bag and tell her to kick rocks or switch off keeping watch, plan on two sleeping bags, and not the zip together kind either. It's bad enough trying to share a bed with someone for multiple nights... One of the smartest things you can do in a BO scenario will be to get good sleep when you can, no harm in tiring yourselves out before retiring to your sleeping bags though ;)

Although you might be a genius. Between the 10 items that you can make her carry and the 30lbs. most women carry in their purses, that adds up to a lot of additional supplies. :thumbsUp:

I'll assume I have my normal stuff on... hiking boots, belt, socks, weather appropriate clothes, pocket knife, hat, watch etc
In order of importance to me
1. water bottle in Pouch w/ cup (is this cheating, are the cup and pouch separate items?)
2. 12" machete in sheath wrapped in 550 cord (a machete is better than an axe around here)
3. Fire starting kit in pocket on the water bottle sheath
4. First aid kit
5. hammock and tarp or bivi bag depending on time of year (I live in the deap south)
6. Katadyn water filter (the water bottle pouch has a bottle of WP pills in it also, but this is better)
7. fishing kit (what is going to get me the most food around here, but I could try my hand at building a wier)
8. water bladder combo back pack
9. mess kit filled w/energy bars
10. wrist compass (The watch will do for that in a pinch but this is better)

Agreed. The 5 common items i think were seeing most of are from most important to least important:
1) Cutting tool
2) Combustion (Fire)
3) Container
4) Cordage
5) Cover
with #1 you can do bassically all the rest if your good(not really me yet). Its also the most difficult to make in nature.
