Question About Savages

 So my brother got a Savage Axis in .30-06 he says it's accurate but the action feels just so damn sloppy and I swear the grip was meant for the dainty hands of a twelve year old girl. I don't have any experience with Savages, so my question is are they all like that, just this model or is his just a fluke?

I'm planning on buying a Savage Axis in a couple of months, I hear they're awesome, maybe you just picked up a bad one. I don't know I don't have experience with Savage but I'll remember this post. Hope this was helpful in someway.

moderm bolt guns like Savage and Remington have some slop to the action. Nothing like youd see on a well made mauser from WWII. That slops ok though. Aslong as it is solid when its locked up with a round chambered its good to go.

The one I hunt with (I have a few) was manufactured in 1937. It is chambered in .300 Savage and is a real nail driver! I will say though; the groups do open up if the barrel gets hot.

Its all in your head JM. The barrel temp dosent affect point of impact unless theres something wrong with the rifle. On my Rem 700 i could get the barrel too hot to touch and have no POI shift. And thats not just that rifle. Any rifle.

First off don't judge savage via the axis, it is a cheapo entry level rifle, that being said they are actually pretty good shooters albeit it ugly and with the cheapest stock ever.

I used to have a Savage model 10FCP in .308 that was a real rem 700-killer.

My next savage will be a Savage 111 with the Heavy fluted barrell and aluminum bedding in the stock in .300 win mag, even though it's a "varmint" set up it still comes in .300 win lol

I also have a Savage Model 99 that was my great grandfathers in .300 sav, very flat shooting rifle.

i had some 110's and 111's, a little slop is ok, and the bolt was fine

axis is the crappiest one they make

Working at Wallmart and cycling their crappy bolt actions all day, I know how rough and scratchy it feels. Then I come home and cycle an old war rifle and feel refreshed.

The only savage I have is a MkII in .22 lr and the accuracy is pretty darn good even with bulk (cheap) ammo.  I do have an EXCELLENT inexpensive bolt gun in .308 and it's a Mossberg ATR.  I'm totally happy with it.  Adjustable trigger standard, recessed crown, and fluted barrel (free-floated as well).  I threw some nice 4 - 16 x 50mm glass on it and she can sure put the rounds where you want them.  The bolt isn't as bank-vault perfect as my 1903 Springfield but I wouldn't trade the barrel or the trigger for the world.
