Nice old school carbine for the money. Back not long ago, these were hard to find and the stock conditions ranged from atrocious to poor firewood. Guess someone (cough, Century, cough) was holding a bunch back in their warehouses, as importers are apt to do. Stocks are still pretty rough, but the 54r is a nice powerful round.

I think the 53 is of Chinese manufacture. Look for Chinese symbols.

It does have Chinese markings, price $ 140.00 which is $40 more than my 91/30 but thats ok, stock was in good condition, action and stock was covered in cosmoline I forgot to check the trigger though, overall it looked ok, the crown was in good condition as well ad lib the 7.62x54r is a kick ass round.

140's a decent price I'd buy it.

140 is indeed a good price on a carbine.
Mosins havent been $100 in 8 months.

Yeah the Type 53 is the chinese model of the mosin m44.

I've been looking for one lately to turn into a scout rifle and can't seem to get my hands on one for less than 200.

If I were you, I'd snatch that thing up today  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

I really enjoyed my M44. Gave it to a friend as his first gun. He still has it. He did a full restoration and put a stylish oldschool olive drap sling on it etc.. bastard...

Take a really good look at the chamber and bore before putting down cash.  Many of the type53s were built with fairly low grade steel. combined with corrosive ammo there can be fairly serious erosion on the chamber and the bore could be in bad shape.  $140 isn't a horrible risk, and you could end up with very nice rifle.

UPDATE:
I bought that Type 53 and it looks awesome, the receiver looks good, I can see the rifling is good, crown is good, bayonet is a little dull and rusty, stock is a lil beat up but no signs of cracks and it has little bit of cosmoline, the bolt my god it is rusty but with a little hard work and rust remover it'll look sexy again. I got a question if you guys can answer it, on top of the receiver there's a number 296, anybody else knows what it means.  :boltAction:

Hello all

Ron L here

I have owned many of the 54R Carbines, but not a Chinese Type 53, I have had the M44, as well as the M-38 and sold a M39 on Consingment for a felow, I did like most of them all but the M44, as I had Issues with the Folding Bayo and how it show with it folded? I have had a Lot of 91/30 the full rifles as well! I see the type 53, as a Great caliber, easy to get and affordable, I see the Guns themself as rough but as many Comm Block weapons, In need of Clean up and Tlc, then you have an item that will last a Very long time! I see them as a Great Budget gun and never see them as a set back! Now if Imports of ammo are ever restricted, like the SLS and AK it will be easy to find ammo till it's all gone, and many US manuf might pick up that slack? I see these rifles and Carbines as a Good item and though I donpt own one right now, that might change over the weekend, who knows? Cheers

Ron

The 296 is probably a factory mark of some sort. Check out the site below, maybe of use for your T53....
