Too Damn Cold
« on: January 21, 2024, 06:02:24 AM »
Well, I put this in the Survival Section because if it gets any colder I don't think I'll survive. Wow! I do not like 16 degrees F. Twenty degrees is my tolerance limit. Somebody make it stop. Please.

Waaawaaa  It was 0 F degrees this morning when I let the dog pack outside.   A couple of nights ago it got down to -8 F degrees, which is cold for middle Tennessee.  Due to snow during the past week, we've had mail delivery just once in 8 days, and local schools were closed all week.  However, by Thursday, we'll be back in the 60's, but it's going to be with 2-5 inches of rain.  Supposedly, 17 Tennesseans have died due this recent bout of wintry weather.  In the north, this cold, snowy weather would be a minor event, but here in Tennessee it's considered a disaster.

We are having a mild winter based on past years and looking around the country. We get down into the high single digits at night and high teens during the day. We also receive 1-2" of lake-affect snow daily. Normally, this time of year the low is sub zero and during the day single digits.

I have been reading somewhere Jackalope, that the winter of 2023/24 has not been kind to Tennessee. Sorry.

All n' all good BUT I found my dog peeing on the porch this morning not going out to the yard as her nonmale morning routine.

Sorry PKv.

I see all of the surrounding county's school systems are closed again tomorrow.  A member of one of my MAGs slipped on some ice and smacked his head, resulting in a brain bleed.  The ambulance couldn't get within five miles of his farm due to ice on the roads.  He ended up being evacuated on a side by side UTV.  He was sent to a trauma center in Knoxville, and they had over 7 similar incidents yesterday.  I've never seen roads in such horrible shape, and the roads crews have apparently never heard of sand.  I keep thinking that the government's failure of doing simple road maintenance is a good indicator that things are falling apart.

Johny, I hope your batteries are topped off.  Hopefully, you won't lose grid power.  On the local two meter net this evening, several folks reported they lost power for over 6 hours last night.  The local power provider reported over 10,000 customer were out of power, while the outside temperature hovered around zero.  Apparently, two sub-stations were overloaded due to the demand, brought on by the frigid temperatures.  Just wait until more folks buy those electric vehicles, that don't charge in cold weather, and will increase the load on the grid.  I keep thinking about all those folks that were shivering in the cold last night, because they have all electric homes.  And they won't be able to turn to gas stoves, because those are deemed evil by the current administration.

Living on the shores of The Chesapeake Bay, all that water forms a 'thermal sink' that mitigates winter cold.  We have dropped into the 20s but nothing spectacular. I prefer the colder winters to kill of the local vermin, insects included  ;-)

Cold is one side of the equation. Wind makes it worse.
Dress right, no worries.
Speaking of which, does anyone plug in the vehicles anymore? Except for diesel engined vehicles.
Engine is warm when started and can generate some heat.

My Explorer has a spot on the engine to plug in. Never used it though.
