Does anyone have any thoughts on the Smith & Wesson M&P40 pistol? ThatGuy purchased two Glock 22s chambered in 40 cal for us to have guns with interchangeable mags, but the glock is too big for my hands and it bucks like a bronco. I checked out the M&P40 which comes with different sized backstraps to adjust the size of the grip, and I loved it. With that said, it's hard to put down $600 on a new full-framed piece when I have a Glock that's already paid for, especially when the Glock is the standard and the M&P is the ripoff...
-
Gen 4 glocks have adjustable backstraps, tell him to sell your glock to 505th and get you a gen 4. As far as muzzle flip its going to be the same.
-
Yeah id say get a Gen 4 for the adjustable backstrap, youll still have interchangable mags. Perhaps a G23 will fit your hands even better. Then tell ThatGuy to load you some more mild rounds for your use. I once shot another guys hand loads in a pistol competition and of course he loaded the rounds as mild as possible to be as effective as possible in the comp. These rounds still cycled the gun perfectly but were very, very reduced in muzzle flip. It was the same or less recoil then a 9mm.
-
Yeah, we talked about going the Gen 4 route. As far as muzzle flip, I have no trouble as long as I can get a good grip. I don't mind how much a gun kicks, as long as it's within my control, but I can't get a controlled grip on the Glock. I shot the M&P40 with no problems. I also shot the 9mm M&P, but it was a pussy cat and I like some recoil to keep me awake. We probably won't sell the Glock, especially to 505th :P
Thanks!

If you could find the Sig P229 pre-owned, it could be a decent price. It has the ergonomic grip. A little smaller than full size though.
http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductList/pistols-sp2022.aspx (http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductList/pistols-sp2022.aspx)
The Sig SP2022 is a full sized polymer. I think the grip may be bigger than what you want, but they come new at around $400.00
I don't know much about them G-words. I've never had the chance to shoot one. I hear they're okay though. LOL!
(Just messin around about them G-words, I know they are very good guns)
This is my little lady here:

-
Your little lady's a good lookin' woman ;) I liked the Sig Sauer, but I was told that my next side arm has to be full-sized with double-stack mags.
I think TG is going to modify the grip on my Glock to try to make it work, but I'm pretty stubborn and was hoping to make a case for buying a pistol that works for me outta the box. TG is pretty adamant that the M&P is not worth the money, but I know his biases and wanted to hear what other's thoughts are on the matter before I wave the white flag yet again. I understand that having interchangeable mags for our weapons is a must and figured that the different sized backstraps would be the best way to accommodate TG's man hands and my small hooks- the Gen 4 could be a good option.
-
Sounds like some sound thinking. TG seems to be a tinkerer, so if anybody can modify the grips, he should be able to.
-
Im guessing you and TG both have the same internet issues being unable to view videos. But ill post it up anyways.
Women are too Stupid to Choose Their Own Gun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmulG3zKfiU#ws)
-
Thanks Kentatic, I'll be sure to make TG watch that video. You absolutely nailed the problem. TG is convinced that my issue with the Glock stems from terminal vaginosis, and it took us going to a shooter's den and renting an M&P40 for me to prove that my problem with the Glock is not a competence issue- I just need a smaller, ergonomic grip. I think he's on board now, we just have to find a way to compromise.
-
I was gonna suggest the M&P Shield, but I thought she wanted as full sized pistol. A guy at work's daughter got one and LOVES it. I've heard nothing but good about those guns. I'm considering it for a bug. (or part time CC)
-
I shot Glock for 10+ years... Then the M&P series came out. I liked the grip much better than the Gen3 or earlier Glock pistols.
For me, the M&P is more ergonomic and more comfortable.
I suppose, If you like sharing calibers, get the .40. Otherwise, now would be a good time for TG to admit the error in his ways,
man up, and shoot 9mm. [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
-
The M&P Shield might be a good choice for my next CC, although that little Ruger .380 LCP looks like a sweetheart (I know, I know, less stopping power). In stereotypical fashion, I currently rock a S&W .38 air weight for my CC, which I love, but I realize that 5 in the cylinder and 5 in the speed-loader might not be enough. First, I have to figure out a full size primary though. TG is very handy, and if anyone can successfully modify my Glock, he's the man to do it as hjmoosejaw said [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
You just brought up the other part of this debate, technique. TG actually wants to chamber the Glocks in 9mm now, since the rounds are cheaper and abundant. The problem is that I like the idea of 40 cal. Although more expensive, we can reload 40 cal rounds if the shit hits the fan and we run out of 9mm. It's not a problem to chamber the Glocks in 9mm cause that's reversible, but an M&P40 can't be re-chambered in 9mm as far as I know, so I would have to settle for the caliber pistol I buy if I go M&P.
-
There are good and bad things said about Taurus. I've never had one. I considered their 24/7 G2. It has a bunch of bells and whistles (if you want bells and whistles). They come in all sizes and have a large capacity. (even the small ones) Different grips, locks, strike two capability, etc. Just a thought.
http://www.taurususa.com/product-details.cfm?id=752&category=Pistol&toggle=tp&breadcrumbseries=247 (http://www.taurususa.com/product-details.cfm?id=752&category=Pistol&toggle=tp&breadcrumbseries=247)
http://www.taurususa.com/gun-selector-results.cfm?series=247&toggle=tp (http://www.taurususa.com/gun-selector-results.cfm?series=247&toggle=tp)
P.S. I'm not sure about the interchangeable grips. That may have been on a different model. Oh well, they still come in all sizes. Large, compact, sub compact. All in 9, 40, and 45 too.
-
I have given the switch to 9mm a lot of thought lately. While I have no luck reloading it myself I can get rounds and be able to go back and forth with a G22 but...
It isn't the first nor will it be the last time I've been wrong Tech and that M&P was a lot crisper than I give them credit for.
Could you get a replacement trigger that makes the take up on an M&P a little shorter?
-
It ain't anywhere as cheap as it is to do on Glock, but I put an APEX trigger pack in every M&P gun I have, from the Pro, 9, and Shield. I love the APEX stuff.
I may be wrong here, but I do seem to remember someone swapping their .40 barrel out with a factory 9mm barrel, not a conversion, a factory barrel... I recall them reporting it running without any issue with M&Ps. Look into it. You know me, I run threaded barrels so I have some 9mm M&P barrels sitting around, just sayin'!
-
Oh you and your threaded barrels. We'll get there someday I promise!
For the life of me I don't know why you couldn't do a barrel swap on a M&P like a Glock.. damn near the same thing anyhow..
-
How about a Walther P99QA?
-
The walther P99 and PPQ are both excellent alternatives to the Glock and M&P series. Another great gun is the magnum research baby eagle poly frame. The new ones (the "fast action") are striker fired, double action with a de-cocker and a hell of a comfy grip.
Here's a good article on them.
http://www.shootingtimes.com/2011/02/09/handgun_reviews_magnum_researchs_baby_eagle_is_back_012611/ (http://www.shootingtimes.com/2011/02/09/handgun_reviews_magnum_researchs_baby_eagle_is_back_012611/)
-
Keep in mind the new baby eagles are pretty much a p99 copy, totally different design from the originals.
-

After some reading there are quite a few people running 9 barrels in their 40 M&Ps.
Technically you shouldn't do that, based on measurements. However people are doing it.
Storm lake makes a M&P conversion barrel, specific. So you can.
-
i own 5 m&p handguns cant recommend them enough
-
I carried AND SHOT a 40 M&P as my duty pistol and if it was between the two I would take my Glock hands down. Even before I modded the frame I still liked it better. Just personal preference, though you should also, as I am sure you already have, take into account the ability to swap mags between shooters. If one has a Glock and the other a M&P... well you get the idea. Also, you can look into, there are companies out there that will convert your <Gen4 to the changeable back strap.
I have shot a sig 229 and owned/shot a 226. I love both the guns, BUT...
Some people may remember the absolute freaking ridiculous time I was having with my 226 jamming after a couple or even every single shot! I later learned that supposedly the Sigs are designed to have +P ammo run through it and that was my issue.
I also loved my 1911 .45, but like you guys are talking bout, the ammo was just expensive. Even more so than the .40. So we switched to 9mm, though with the abundance of .40 and Glock 22 mags and parts out there I am seriously looking at getting one as my next gun purchase.
Just my $.02
-
why would you want more than one caliber?
pick a caliber have everyone run it and stockpile it like crazy
and 9mm fits the bill the best for preppers
-
Why?
Because while I stock up on a F***-ton of 9mm SOMEONE ELSE is stocking up on .40... A LOT...

Its a valid question OONW, I dont understand what your trying to say either. Unless you mean the recent purchases by DHS etc of .40 S&W in large quanities. I would agree its good to have the same caliber as the POTENTIAL enemy. But i dont think it should be the deciding factor. Especially in this case where the military runs the other caliber in question, 9mm.
If i could id consider exchanging my G23 for a G19 but i wont be putting a conversion barrel in it because i dont want to tamper with reliability no matter how minimal the risk.
These days everyones abandoning the .40 ship.

I OWN A 9MM. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A .40 ALSO. I WANT THE VERSATILITY OF BEING ABLE TO USE EITHER CALIBER (DEPENDING ON AVAILABILITY) SINCE BOTH ARE BIG IN MY AO. SIMPLE, HUH?
I would write more but feel like it would be a waste of time. If anyone would like my opinion please send me a bloody email.

Well that was my last attempt at salvaging communications with you despite your agression towards me in previous posts..
Your exploding on simple questions of your point, which BTW was far from crystal clear.
Your anger has consumed you. Goodluck at life, your no longer worth typing at.

you dont like arguing while talking guns? ???
you must be new here........ :))

Sorry for calling people bitches, that was probably a little harsh. I like special-k's comparison to the Monty Python skit better!
I know your questions are probably rhetorical and meant to be funny, mountainredneck, but I'm a buzz kill and I'm gonna use this as an opportunity to hop back up on my soapbox, cause I'm a chick and that's part of the spirit killing process.
I have utilitarian tendencies that will become blatantly obvious the more I post. I don't mind arguing about guns or anything else, as long as the argument is productive and working in my favor >:D
What excites me most about this forum is the potential for alert, intelligent people to exchange info about how they are dealing with current issues and preparing for what's to come in the foreseeable future, while being accepting of differences in personal preference and allowing for personal freedoms. When like minded people allow nuances in personal views to get in the way of this free exchange of ideas, it makes me wonder how this country, and the rest of the world will ever get better if even a small group of America's finest such as this, can't avoid throwing verbal domestics.
We've all heard the saying a million times about being able to lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. Let's put a new spin on that. You lead the horse to water cause you need a drink, regardless of what the horse needs, but if you take the horse with you and keep him hydrated he can help you out by carrying your gear and you. Wouldn't it also be smart to save your energy and the horses by gently leading him to that water instead of spurring, whipping, and jerking the lead the whole way? I'm not thinking of anyone in particular for this analogy, just a general example of how I'm thinking I should try to conduct myself on this forum, sometimes as the horse and sometimes as the rider. I have a dirty mind and I just made myself chuckle a little bit ;D
Further more, I want an M&P40. Let's work together and find a way to convince TG that it's okay for that to happen ;)
In the words of a completely worthless human being, and a shining example of why PCP is a bad drug, "can't we all just get along?". R.I.P. Rodney King

what i dont understand is why your hell bent on 40, if it "bucks like a bronco" that is a horrible choice in caliber for you [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

I'm going to second what someone else mentioned, Sig Pro SP2022. Could be the perfect balance between quality and price and performance. Just saying....

Just the Gen 2 Glock that I have, because I can't get enough of my hand around. I did not have any muzzle flip issues with the M&P40, because the grip fits my hand much better. In fact, the M&P40 did not have as much recoil as my .38 S&W airweight, which I love to shoot- probably because the M&P is heavier. The Gen 2 has a really boxy grip. I can't wrap my fingers around it to make a solid connection. When I shoot the Gen 2 it looks like a small child trying to drink from a 64 oz. big gulp. TG liked my small hands till he tried to put a Glock in them :(
-
I gotta admit, with your next to last post, I started losing track with it all. All I really got by the end of it was, "sometimes as the rider", and you have a dirty mind. The rest is now a blur. LOL!
-
She is deep, no?
-
Thatgirl, lemme give you a back to the future moment. I'm not as tiny as michael J. Fox or Tom Cruise, but my hands prefer either a single-stack .45 or a browning hi-power or CZ-75. Everything else is too ergonomically fat or slow. The CZ-75 9mm is a badass machine at a reasonable price that just feels good in the hands - 16 +1. (For full size, they also make mid-size). If you have a serious budget, the Hi-Power is the ONLY 9mm in my book. The grip angle on either is superb and can't be matched by anything today. If you mention Smith and Wesson stick to a K-frame .357. One of my favorites...
-
She is deep, no?
You got that right TG. I re-read it and she wants you to get her an M&P 40. I vote she gets her M&P.

Yeah, I was gonna tell him that for some reason, you wanted to take an M&P 40 to the water and you wanted him to get you a horse.

Hey, if you want to talk him into getting me a horse too hj, that'd be great! Bitst don't fit in TG's mouth right and the saddle keeps falling off [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

Just to let you all know, even though I'm likely going with the M&P series whether it be a 9mm or .40, I am reading all of your suggestions and I will take some time to look at the other pistols mentioned before deciding. Especially since I'm realizing that I was mixing up guns I'd looked at. For some reason I had it in my head that Sig Sauer's all have single-stack mags, not sure why :-[
Can't thank you all enough for jumping in with your suggestions, you all rock [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

You might have to try bare back. That Sig SP2022 is a great gun. I think it has grips like the P226 though. When I bought my 226, it was the E2 version that had the new ergonomic grips. A lot of guys liked the 226, but thought the grips were a little too much. So they came out with the E2 grips to fit a wider range of shooters. They've since discontinued the E2 because they went over so well, they just started putting them on all 226 models. Either one, I'm comfortable with, but I went with the E2 so my family could shoot it more easily. I don't know though if you can get the SP 2022 with the E2 type grips. ( I will try to find out ) If you can, I think that would be an excellent option for you. (Brand new, approx. 400.00) You might not have a problem with the regular grips either. You would have to hold one.

Hey ThatGirl, here is an average review of the 2022. They do come with 3 different size grips. ( I don't think you get all 3, but if you have to send for one, there about 25.00) He mentions they're like E2 grips. And night sights, Some have them, some don't. Gotta get to work, hope this helps:

Thanks for posting the Sig Sauer SP2022 video, HJ, that was good introductory info and, it's hard to tell from the video, but the profile of the grip looks like it could work for me. Since I'm just now familiarizing myself with the world of full- size pistols, I don't think I will be that bummed that all I can get is possibly a night sight, lazer grip and have to have a holster made special, but that might be naive thinking. You may have just confounded my decision further, that seems like a fine gun! In the next few weeks I'm gonna fondle all the pistols I can get my hands on in some local gun stores and make a decision come payday at the end of the month.
By the way HJ, great choice for your avatar. Jeremiah Johnson is one of my favorite movies! [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

As an aside, in the SP2022 video HJ posted, the guy sounds like Cleveland from Family Guy- made me chuckle ;D

One of my BIGGEST gripes about Sig and HK guns is the height of the slide and how far the sight are from the back of my hand.
This is also what contributes to some guns having more of a "flip". A greater slide mass moving whist cycling.
I can shoot both HK and Sig well...I just don't like them.
-
Good lookin' out, technique. I can see that the height might be an issue. I suppose instead of just fondling all of the aforementioned pistols, I should rent the one's that might work for me, or see which of my buddies have one's that I can shoot. It just sucks to dish out range fees + rental fees + bullets + energy dealing with people. I'd be a happy woman if I never went to a gun range again- New Mexico has plenty of good shooting berms on BLM land...

THANK YOU.... i cant stand the height of the slide on those things. Its like your resting a brick ontop of your hand. That alone makes me hate Sig's. Its like wtf do they have in that slide that other pistols dont that requires the barrel to be so dam high.

Concerned about height of slide? Maybe give a Caracal F (fullsize) or C (compact) a try for around $400. Seem to be getting more and more popular here in the States.

Last night emphasized the need for me to get that new pistol. TG went camping with the boys this weekend and my poor dog was on high alert trying to protect me all night, barking her head off at every little bang, clang and rustle from the wind blowing. I ended up sleeping with the AR-15 next to me and my .38 revolver in my hand. The .38 didn't seem like enough and the AR seemed like a little too much. They made for some cold ass cuddling...
-
Nothing wrong with an AR for home defense. But that things going to possibly bring you to your knees if you shoot it indoors without ear protection. That shit hurts when its fired by your head WITH ears on.

Good looking out Ken. I figure if the 5 in the .38 don't do the trick, going def is still better than the alternative as long as I can kept my shit together after the first shot...
