How about scavenging a car alternator and battery to improvise a power plant using (wind, water, bicycle, etc.) to make power.
many alternators have a voltage regulator built in so you don't cook the battery.  Now go get the LED lights in newer cars and you can light your house at night.

How about dead batteries aren't "dead". They generally have some voltage left in them which could easily power a light with a lower demand then what you were using it in.
1.5v LED lights are great for this.
I have a bag of "dead" batteries from my higher demand lanterns/lights. which I just cycle through my low output lights for the next month or so.
