Title: Semi auto M249
Post by: APX808 on April 10, 2015, 02:56:29 PM
FN M249S Semi-Auto Version Release Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDmyF3uujAo#ws)

It's said is going to be around $4000

The video lies as it mentions a "battle-proven design" working well since '88, but this civilian version is going to be closed bolt.

If I had a bit of disposable income, I would love one.

Hell I'd get one if I had recyclable income forget disposable.  The real problem would be buying ammo to keep it fed.

It would be a cool $4k toy and great conversation piece at the range but that is about it.  What is the point of a semi auto light machine gun.  It will still weigh the same as a std SAW. That is a load to hump around for only semi auto.  If you cant go f/a then it really isnt a SAW (squad automatic weapon). If you want 5.56 stick with an AR with a good trigger. Need 7.62 go with the SCAR 17 again with a good trigger.

That said if I had enough that $4k didnt bother me I would definitely get one.

Like any AR - It can be modified with a drill press and the correct trigger group and bolt assembly ;) Oh and plans. They are available online.

If you have access to a 3d printer you don't even have to drill holes.

The only problem is that this civilian version is a closed bolt operating system as was mentioned in the OP. The actual SAW is an open bolt system.  It is not just a simple change like with an AR.  Basically it is just a heavy semi auto 5.56.....granted it is belt fed.

A boy can still dream :D   I still drool a bit thinking about the M240LW that Barrett had on display at SHOT not to mention the Dillon minigun. I think they bring those just to remind us what we cant have.
