Saiga Conversion
« on: October 04, 2011, 07:57:12 PM »
I just wrapped up the bulk of this project. I am still debating on whether or not to replace the handguard with a rail, or just mounting a rail to this one. I also plan on threading the muzzle for a brake. That's a Tromix side folding stock, 1911 grips and a modified factory handguard. You can't see it because my camera sucks, but the safety is cut to hold the bolt back, and it's modified to take AK mags.

Turkey, raising those questions are not of need here. Such things will only hurt the site IMO.

Turkey if your just looking out for him which is cool perhaps in the future a PM making him aware of this would be better.

Yeah I made sure I got the compliance parts. Thanks for looking out  C:-)

Next step will most likely be to mount a recessed rail on the bottom of the handguard for an AFG or stubby grip. Course I might just get another 1911 grip adapter and epoxy that sucker to the bottom of the handguard (like the AMD65 with the matching opposite grips). That would be kinda neat lol

That's why I don't use the slant brakes. I like the slotted brakes for recoil reduction, and they make the muzzle blast quite a bit beefier too lol.

sorry if people felt my comment was out of line, alot of people dont realize that by just putting a pistol grip on a saiga makes it a non sporting weapon and has to be 922r compliant. Rifle looks good by the way, alot of work put into it. i wouldnt bother threading the barrel on my m-63's i just have the thread protectors, i cant tell any real difference between them and my romy g with the slant break.

Cool. They're always fun to play with. Looks like ya did a good job.

I've been messing with conversions a while meow...
I lose interest in them quickly though. The top one I started back on LnL
The bottom I did the other day and didn't finish. Both are on super old tax stamps.
Probly a waste of money on my part, I hate shotguns. Kills time though.

If I had the money I'd love to buy one of those... Need an $800 AR-22? lol

What are we looking at? 8" barrels. Major PITA to shorten and tune that system, as you now well know. If I were going to SBS an S-12, I'd probably go with a 12" barrel just because you don't have to shorten the gas system itself (modify, sure. Shorten? no). Self-regulating plugs help in this regard considerably. My S-12 is so overgassed my receiver has enlongated several mm's (while all stamped AK's will do this over time, mine did it in a couple years).

We're looking at 10 and 10.5. Different length gas systems too.

If I were to do it again, I'd do a 12 even though they are still kinda
picky on ammo from what I've seen. The bottom one shot everything
I test fired it with, even the crappiest birdshot I could find.

Yeah but every gas-operated shotty is gonna be ammo sensitive to some extent--hence why adjustable gas systems exist in the first place. If you want it to run everything on one setting, it's gonna be really really overgassed when using high-brass rounds.
