I too have been in the market for a 308 battle rifle. And Ive finally landed on the PTR91 GI model. I chose this rifle for the fact that it is designed to cycle not only high grade match or mil-spec ammo, but it has its tolerances lossend just slightly to accommodate all the crap ammo out there. I researched the CETME lines, and while a well respected H&K variant. They have a few draw backs in the American markets. Many of them are parts kits that were imported and the fitted with crap barrels. Some are just crap metal that will warp while firing changing the POI with every couple of rounds. Others only received 9 flutes in the chamber instead of the 11 used by H&K. This led to a higher rate of jams. On the bright side, There are allot of great cetme rifles out there that shoot great for the price. However about 30 to 35% of the ones on the market have what any serious shooter would call a fatal flaw or two.
As far as the 308 family of battle rifle goes though. You cant go wrong with the M14 a good FAL (if u can find one) an original H&K and some saigas and AR10s are worth looking at. I would have to say one of my biggest reasons for going to the PTR-GI, was the over abundance of inexpensive equipment and replacement parts on the market. The one piece of advice Ive been getting from PTR forums is to get about 400 rnds through the rifle as soon as possible after purchasing. Some of the earlier productions would crack the trunnion within 400 rnds. PTR has since corrected this issue with a better trunnion. But get your shake down rnds through it while you have the one year warranty still in effect.
