Recondo Operations Group (ROG) FTX March 23-25

https://recondooperationsgroup.com/
more details: https://www.facebook.com/recondooperationsgroup/

What:
This AAR (After Action Review) is to briefly outline my attendance of a Recondo Operations Group (ROG) ftx two-day class facilitated by "Win" at Recondo Operations Group (ROG) in NC.

This class was $150.00 for 2 full days of training and onsite camping the Friday night before class started. The best 150 bucks I have spent in a very long time <period>

Who: Win with four assistant instructors (all prior students) and nine students. The students basic pistol and rifle skills ranged from one of my neighbor/friends I took along being the second time he fired an AR to prior military/.gov folks with plenty of training and all between.
A few folks I overheard one this was his 18th class with ROG another this was the 8th I believe. After completing the class I can see why they keep coming back.

When: Saturday March 23-25, 2018. Classes started at 0900 hrs. The weather was not the greatest but I appreciated that. I rather train in non ideal conditions.

Where:  Training site address: (Public information) 1820 FL McDaniel Rd, Garland, North Carolina 28312

Comments: Win and his professional cadre moved as safely and quickly as the least experienced person in class would allow. The class although was designed as basic intro shooting with more of a
FTX (Field training exercise)

See FB class description here:
Code: [Select]
Cost: $150
Round count: 200 rifle and pistol
Friday night :8pm for group to set up tents.
Saturday: Pistol course, knife skills and shelter
Sunday: Rifle course, fire and water
You will need ear and eye pro.
A good knife of at least 6 inchs in length.
All the food and drinks and gear you need to be on the range for the weekend.
This course will cover Core skills in using a pistol and a rifle and positions as well. It also will cover fire making for a purposes. Long fire, upside down fire, self feeding fire, Dakota pit fire. We will go over water harvesting and purifying, Shelter making, Large, Med and hasty. Knife use in the field. Tracking and movements.
This is a basic course that will allow you to use the skills you have and the ones you are going to learn. We plan to increase your skill set and your confidence with your firearms and Survival.

Once the instructor and cadre saw the overall class performance it quickly became nothing I would call a "basic course" To be clear any drill you did not feel comfortable running live you could do dry or pass on completely. This only happened once that I can recall and it was not due to the drill being unsafe it was more of an ammo conserving move.
(lesson learned for next time...bring more than the stated number)

Random:
I highly recommend this class or even trying any other class with them if you are in the area. I will be going back for more!
I wish I would have taken more ammo, I do not feel robbed or bad about it but I do feel like I would have done more repetitions of several of the drills.
Win and group is not afraid to give you MORE than you pay for. We did a patrol and walked over to his long range all students had the opportunity to shoot out to 300, 500 and 600 ...in a "basic course"
He also gives you drills and "homework" you can do at your own home to improve when you are at the range IF you put the time in.
Its not a hey come back and pay me for this other class I have. Yes, that is recommended if you would like but
they give you enough to see you may not know what you think you know or at the very least an opportunity to re validate your level of confidence with yourself and your weapons.
Camping was awesome...even with the cold weather/rain. Great group of students. (embrace the suck)

Sad to admit this, I was stuck in tunnel vision when it came to tactical training. I found a place I enjoyed and thought it was the best thing and had no reason to see or try anything else. I was wrong and hate that it took me this long to realize it. Lesson learned I will research and continue adding new instructors and training into my training schedule.

I will continue to train at the previous place also tell I see an issue or a reason not to. I urge you all to try and train with a variety of trainers. This is no discredit to whoever it is you are training with and you do not have to pick one over another. Personally I find things I like and see things I do not like but at least I know about these other options or ways of doing things now.
One way does not work for everyone.

get after it

Do they have a place to park a camper, 21 foot from hitch ball cup to back bumper?  No shore hookups needed?  If so I would be very pleased to get there a couple times a summer.

I could do food, gas, bed and tuition for under $300.  That would be great.  I am too old, sore and repaired to move much after a night on the ground.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

God created Man, Col. Sam Colt made him equal, John Moses Browning turned equality to perfection, Gaston Glock turned perfection into plastic fantastic junk.

Good write up, thanks!  Great price for a two day course particularly for an almost 1:2 ratio of instructors.

I definitely believe in getting training from a variety of sources. Every now and then you will get a dud, but if you do some diligent research to will generally get something from the class. Sometimes you will find an instructor that you will want to return to regularly. This year may be my first year in a while without taking at least 1 class with a "new" instructor.  I highly recommend a few Costa, Cowan (SageDynamics), Petty (Centrifuge), Doyle (Follow Trough Consulting) and Vandunk (Pace Performance).  I still have yet to attend a Max Velocity class but definitely have it on my list.

There are a few that I will never go to again. Also there are some that I would attend if they happen to have a class near me, but that I would not travel very far for.

Glad to hear there is another potential source of good training available.

I would think they would have the room but may want to call or reach out to them to double check before showing up.

Ground is no fun, I did a cot in a nice warm tent :)

@ CJS06

Thank you, I will add these to my list to keep an eye out for.
