Title: questions????
Post by: JoJo on September 27, 2019, 02:55:53 PM

I'm asking for future reference. :roflmao:
Has anyone completed a polymer 80% and if so how did the build turn out?
 Was it worth it?

On completing a forged aluminum 80% do people sell the jig or rent it out? It seems everybody one is
out of stock.

Mmmm JoJo. I know of nobody who has completed a poly lower here on UP or personally.

Several years ago, I made the suggestion that UP buy a jig and among to spread the cost. NOBODY responded who wanted to play. Buy your own 80% lowers and borrow the jig among UP friends. Nobody bit.  :(

Thoughts?

I bought a kit from 80% Lowers a couple of years ago and milled an aluminum lower.
Now they have a revised version for sale that is apparently more user friendly. I got the Gen 1.
I didn't have any trouble using it - I think my router was probably way oversized and it was a bit awkward, but no problems.

At $140 I am not sure if it is really worth the trouble to send it around...

I think I might have once had a jig.  Maybe a pair.  Storage is crammed full and those things are small.  Might have to look.

There are a couple of different Polymer lowers available in 80%.  If you are going to go that route make sure that you get one that has proper reinforcement in some few area.  The weak point on most polymer AR lowers is the buffer tube extension joint.  If the 80% lower you are using doesn't have  metal treads and some reinforcement in that area do not bother with it.  At the price difference I usually suggest people go with an aluminum 80% lower.  I unfortunately don't have any Jigs to send around.  I plotted the AR lower into a 5axis HAAS.  It takes about 10 min to complete a lower.....while I drink a beer.

5axis HAAS. I could buy a lot of AR's for the price of a used one but good on you if you have access to one.

If you were reasonably close to me I'd have to deliver you a six pack and hang out an hour or so.
