Question for the gun afficianatos
« on: June 11, 2016, 08:38:34 AM »
Ok, so way back when I got a 7.62x39 and a bunch of bullets. Then a few years ago I built my first AR (detailed in the archives somewhere) and got some bullets. I like the AR platform, so now I'm thinking about an AR47. I've read some of the older interweb stuff about problems, however those seem to have gone away with newer mfg's and now there are "several" folks who make reliable (according to reviewers) uppers and mags (especially ASC).

Anyone else built one of these? Issues ? I think I want one, but can you talk me out of it ?

Great question. I think CJS has a Blackout but not a AR47...May be wrong.

The number 2 easily findable round is the 7.62x39. This would be good to have one of these in your arsenal.

A lot of folks like the 7.62x39 mm but I think its a bit overhyped due to the mystique of being Soviet and us having been on the receiving end.

(Here is a quality analysis of effects on humans of both rounds by a trauma MD: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/01/01/spec-ops-doctor-rather-shot-with-ak-47-over-m16/ )

It's not a bad round and has its roots in the german 7,92 Kurz round (the comma is not a typo) but the 5.56mm and the .223 Rem shoot much flatter which results in better accuracy and some say better effects.

Now the combloc may be less deflected by bushes/shrubbery but that its only superiority which is ultimately why the Soviet Union switched to 5.45mm a round from a similar design concept as the 5.56.

still nothing wrong inherently with the 7.62 combloc.. but since our ammo importing laws have changed the big cost advantage is gone.
Otherwise I would be all over a AR47 marrying the ergonomics of the AR platform with the cheaper round.

Back in the day  a 7.62x39 mm round could be had for 8 cents a round or even less.
But now they are  the same price as 5.56/.223 Steel cased ammo.

And this common round, does like I said, shoot flatter and will also be more readily available due to battlefield pickup ;)

(there are exceptions to what you might do...Having said all that if I had a team at a BOL and was maintaining many firearms for a group (not that I am ;) ) I would consider stashing one 7.62x39mm caliber rifle so we can make use of a windfall just in case we ever stumble on someones a huge surplus 7.62x39 stash via battlefield pick-up...)

But If I am equipping myself or maybe just 1 or 2 other guys I'd stick with the 5.56/.223 caliber rifles.

I admit there are many schools of thought on this and not all will agree with me but as a former Combat Developer and Operational Concepts Writer for the Joint Force I trust my ability to conduct a rational-all-things-considered analysis based on our given non standard operational environment as Preppers.

I agree with Erick regarding the 7.62x39 round.  Most of the early advantages of the round were how inexpensive it was. Now the cost advantages are just not what they were.

Brat, if you are interested in going down the 7.62x39 AR route consider some of the newer options that are out there.  Even though ASC has done a decent job with reliable mags they are still few and far between supply wise and you will have trouble finding them as pickups.  There are a couple of AR lowers made that are designed to accept AK mags (Rock River, MGI, and now CMMG makes their mutant).  This will generally function much more reliably with the 7.62x39 round. Also the mags are very readily available. The one real shortcoming of this round with the AR pattern is the bolt. The area of the bolt face with the lugs is is much thinner with the 7.62 than the 5.56. This is a weak point that leads to a much higher failure rate than with the 5.56.  CMMG avoids this by using a proprietary design that is closer to an AR10.

As far as the 300BLK is concerned, I love the round and do have a rifle. The benefit is that other than the barrel all other components are identical to the 5.56 including mags and bolt. It is very accurate out to 400yds through a 10"barrel but has a significant drop off out past there. I dont keep it as my primary as the ammo is just too scarce and will not be available if/when things go sideways.

I keep a 7.62 x39 rifle as well, as Erick mentioned it could come in handy.  Mine is a a classic AKM (underfolder). Nice and small and stashes very easily. I keep a small stash of ammo on hand for it as well :-).  If I were inclined to go the AK pattern for my primary I would however go the 5.45 mm route of the 74 over the 7.62 of the 47.
