At some point you may want to become familiar with your local flora, especially on the way to and around your BOL. This is a video I found by the author of "Botany in a Day", talking about his book and giving a brief intro to a few key plant families. I consider this book to be a great help for trying to ID plants and plant families, regardless of your background. I suggest that you pair this with a field guide to your regional plants.
