What are some of the things you can do/are doing to prevent something like this happening?

This like so many things depends on the type of collapse, the duration, and your location. Personally I believe staying out of sight and make your residence appear "raided" will help groups stroll on by your property without taking a second glance. Though, in reality if it's a long duration and you're in a populated area it'll be next to impossible to tend to a garden, animals, chores, etc. without being seen. This is where I feel the unprepared come in. The prepared members of a community harden their defenses while the others work the gardens, crops, feed animals, gather water, etc. You have to learn to be creative about setting up your defenses too.

Good read/vid, this should wake the doubters and lukewarm up. Defend at depth is what comes to mind here. Keep the fight out of your home/community's line of sight. confront these types down the road so to speak, don't let them have the luxury of watching your family/community and making plans.

I think that video was a little over-dramatized but it raises some good questions.

Do I really think that groups of marauders will be that organized? no. But then again, we can't really judge by what we've seen in modern day disasters because order is always restored relatively quickly. I suppose the probability of very organized groups like the fictional one in the video would probably increase after several months without rule of law. Once people really start to get hungry, the free-for-all (i.e. Katrina chaos, LA riots) will be over and whoever is left might begin organizing like this.

I sure as hell hope I don't get caught off guard by scum like that.

I agree that it's unlikely that this level of tactics and strategy will be performed by simple thugs and gangs I do however see other preppers doing such things because they focused on weapons and gear and not on what matters most (food, water).

This post was very good. And i do think that gangs and thugs can operate on this level. They may be thugs and criminals but they arent stupid. The group depicted in this vid is why i want a community based survival plan in place. Saftey in numbers people.

I think it was Sun Tzu that said "Never underestimate your enemy".

There's going to be a lot of hungry military vets out there as well.  Studies have also shown that quite a few gang members have joined the military and have taken their training back to the neighborhood.
