Notes from a novice....
« on: June 01, 2014, 04:36:44 PM »
Well, mark it down, 6-1-2014. My AR is done and shoots well. I like it, alot.

Now some notes / observations...  :sarcasm:

BCG will not go into upper without the lug thingy on the bolt assembly being pulled out, now matter how hard you try.

Firing pin retaining pin is harder to get back in than one would ever imagine in your wildest dreams.
It's such a simple thing. :o

Bolt cam pin has one side apparently larger than the other side. This sucker is not marked, "this side up" and that is the side that goes up, ironically.

Safety detent and spring under grip. Better have that like you think you want it, cause if you take that grip off to look or check or adjust, it will self launch.

Detent and helical spring. Two words I don't like anymore and should be removed from Webster's. Nor am I fond of the little parts associated with those words. They too are capable of self launching and will land in areas of your home or workshop you never knew existed, unless you built it yourself.

My fingers are too big for most of the parts that "I don't like anymore".

Although I didn't need it, I can now see the justification for buying a spare parts kit. Will do. Check.

It IS louder than a .22, don't let the itty bitty bullet fool ya.

100 rounds is not enough to adequately "test fire", IMHO.

Hard to drink that celebratory beer with that smile on your face.

Can't wait to do it again.  :fuckYeah:

It's just a very basic rifle. My first ever AR, first ever build and not near the level of "niceness" of the weapons I've seen posted. I only wish I had the coins. But, it's mine, I like it and and it shoots well enough for me. Target was 30 yards into the pond over the top of my front end loader. I only have iron sights. Some type of optics will have to wait. Need more bullets and a sling.

Good looking rifle Brat, sure does feel nice to cobble one together doesn't it?

Make sure you stake down that castle nut and double check the staking on your bcg, bARf.com has some great info about hows and whys.

Thanks all.

TG, Yep, still grinning.  Thank you for the link and advice.

Burt, lower, lpk, stock, complete upper was 470. Add on the rear site for another 55. All the tools I borrowed from a friend (mag block, ar wrench, punches, etc). He emailed me a list of some other little goodies to look for, like this thing called a "cat tool". I dunno, but he said I'd be happier with one after I get some more bullets shot thru it. But I looked it up and it looks like it'll be handy.

I thought he was making fun of my four cats and it was gonna be some kind of dog...

Looks good for a rifle for women and children :lmfao: good job its fun the build then by the way feeler gauges and channel locks help with the detents and getting the pins in. Oh and duct tape so you don't scratch it.

:lmfao:  Thanks for the tip on the feeler gauges, makes sense. I'll pick a set up while I'm out looking for some mag pouches to match my battle skirt. The rifle already matches.   :lmfao:

Brat big +1 to you!! I do have to say the next at I build is going to rifle length! Why because I have a middy now and tried to shoot some light reloads it wouldnt function but the ol sp1 loved it, so its only 20" for me from now on!!@
