We've all seen the games. Splinter Cell, Metal Gear, etc. We talk about ninjas and Batman.

So does anyone here actually practice sneaking, or have seriously investigated the methods for doing so? In town? In the woods?

I 'still hunt' for deer and squirrels.

I take three steps and stop for 2-3 minutes and then take three steps and stop for 2-3 minutes and then repeat for hours on end.

I have umpteen squirrels that have been added to the pot using this method. I am more of an ambush deer hunter; however my brother has gotten several deer using this method. The best is when the snow just starts to fall  :))

Now in town it depends on where you are. I am a believer in that you dress like the locals...

> Venus Beach, CA. : Wear a speed-o and flex your muscles as you walk down the beach
> Newport, RI : Boat shoes- no socks, short sleeve polo with collar turned up, Levis with creases and act just a bit, tipsy
> Small town at the BOL : Dirty work clothes, muddy steel toed boots and a ball cap (Camo preferred)

i'd imagine that in-town-sneaking would just be a matter of being ultra casual and blending in, whereas woodland sneaking would be actual creeping. idunno though, never really tried unless I was pranking someone, lol.

In my experience it seems to work best accidently. There may or may not be something to the energy you give off when you are actively trying to sneak up on a specific person. They get that "im being watched" feeling some times. Kind of like spearfishing. Or really any hunting. The fish can sense when you are wanting to kill them. The times you go out with no speargun the fish will swim right up to you. When your on the hunt they are no where to be found.

Its possible, litterally telling yourself your not trying to sneak up on them as you ARE might help in some small way. Dont focus directly on the task at hand.

Just me thinking out loud.

I knew a man that could stalk wildlife.  Slightly Scary Trooper Terry was his name, the one we gave him.  He was a scary dude.  He was in our old hunting group.  He would use a first layer of ash, to help to hide his smell, directly on his skin, and he'd even cover his underwear as well, really heavy, depending on the time of year, he'd then cover his outer layer or skin with mud that would stay on well, and then as a final layer he would stick local vegetation into the mud and make it stick.  It was crazy looking.

I can't remember how long it would take him to take one step, but I believe it was almost a minute or 30 seconds.  So slow a deer would not notice the movement.  He also made no sound when his foot touched the ground, SLOWLY moving twigs that would snap, or anything that would make a noise.

He also used the sounds of the birds and other small wildlife to figure out where there was movement in the woods.  He said he could tell direction, and could often tell the difference between the wildlife calls of deer moving through the woods or man.  He would also take long breaks between movement and just listen, to make sure he would intersect a herd of deer coming through the woods.  He would rarely take a deer, but what he would do is come back with a handful of White Tail Deer fur in his hand, as proof he had touched a doe.  The bucks were harder he said.

He would act like a tree basically, once the deer were in sight.  If he planned it just perfect, he said the deer would brush up against his hand like it was a tree limb, and that's when he would wait until his hand was near the tail and he'd grab a handful of that white fur, as proof he had touched the deer.  Crazy shit.  He said he learned it from an old Indian who practically took him in as a son growing up, he taught his friend, and passed the knowledge down.  It was some wild crazy shit.

I remember him sneaking up on me, in my stand one day.  I think he did it just to F with me.  When he got right underneath my stand, he did a bird call.  I looked down, and then he continued to move on.  I always thought it was very dangerous because he didn't wear ny hunter orange at all.  Ohh well.

When he would take a deer, he would say some prayer as well, for the spirit of the deer, and all this other Indian stuff.  Also, he usually hit the deer with a homemade bow and arrow.  It was pretty cool stuff.  The kills were usually made from less than 5 yards.

Yep, in town sneaking is all about acting and perfectly blending into the crowd, being very cool and casual and no nervousness at all.

Some of the best books ever written about urban camo were written by Kevin Mitnick.

Check him out.

I don't know how I could train my joints to that level of endurance.

When I was younger me and my cousin would play a game called "Spy" at our grandparents (since thats where we lived for a few months) where we'd pretend to be asleep for the nightly checkup from grandma and 10 mins later we'd set up tasks for eachother to see if we could accomplish them without getting caught. We got pretty good and learned little tricks like walking as close to the wall as possible because the middle of the floor would creak etc. Fun times, fun times.
