This is not the perfect bag, this isn't even close to all the stuff I would want to have with me if I needed to go any real distance or had to walk away knowing I would never be coming back but this is more than enough for me to walk the 19 miles home from work or the 42 miles home from town. I didn't show the First Aid kit but it got a little more in it than just bandaids.. I've got iodine water tabs and even a sewing kit in there.

My walk home from either direction would be along a flowing river in a Cottonwood stand. Being what it is the world is full of things I could press into service like tin cans and wires for a pot or a low hanging highway bill board skin into a tarp but the truth is I am a serious hiker and the last walk I took that was 19 miles took me just under 6 hours and it had =5,000ft of gain while my walk home will have +/-250ft. The walk home from town would be a meaner challenge but not one that couldn't be done with a shitty nights sleep in a pile of leaves. I do have a box in the back of the truck that has 2 days food, lightweight mess kit and warm clothes and giant hat if need be.

Well first and foremost I think you're a dick for never writing or calling. That being said for you that's the perfect rig plus what's in the truck. Attached is my love and hopes that you will someday return to me!!

Interesting GHB.  Does it stay in vehicle routinely? 

Why the Atwood Kevlar rather than basic 550 cord?  I am completely unfamiliar with the Atwood.

How comfortable are the strapettes?  They look like they would ok for first half day or so but go bad after that, on a comfort scale.


I have an 'all the time in the truck' small kit because 95% of my travels are less than 20 miles away.  I also have a one strap sling bag thats taken with me any time I go more than 40 miles one way away from home.  I figure worst case, barring injury, I can do the 20 in 2-3 days and the 40+ in 6-8.  Yeah busted leg bones and metal in there reduces your daily distance.

I also routinely carry an AR-7 with about 100 rounds inside a denim sling sack behind/under the back seat.

Let me get a bit of free time and I will do up a note with a few pics on the small kit for critique and commentary.

It goes every where I goes Nemo! I bought the Kevlar line not even knowing it was what it was, I was headed out of Portland for a long hike around the base or Mt. Rainier and found myself among other things at a loss for any cordage.. that's just a left over piece that I find handy to tie a pot down if I want to bring a pot with me somewhere. 

The Strapettes make the bag as far as I am concerned, I couldn't carry it without them. I prefer this fanny pack with straps to a small back pack because it gets much less sweaty while carrying and keeps me from over loading my bag.

Carry that sling bag and you'll regret it man, those sons of guns really put a hurt on the lower back.

No worries about the pace, just add coffee, a pot and chow if it's gonna be 2 nights cause that third morning is gonna be rough without it

I usually have a long arm with a couple of mags in the truck but not always so that would get added to the pile, I always keep my extra mags in a molle pouch that could be slipped onto the belt if need be and also keep good slings on my long guns for the exact same reason.

Close but not it.. It's something that I have kicked myself in the ass a couple of time since taking it out to loan a friend.

My pack is similar. I also carry one of my BaoFeng's with an extra battery. Here are a few items that I also carry that I didn't see on your list TG.

Rethinking my pack thx to TG's start to this subject.  I am sure I have borrowed things out of it and never replaced.

As a side note: If I am traveling over 100 miles and I am not wearing my Belleville boots, I throw them in the truck just in case. Along with the boots, I throw into the truck an ammo can with a handgun and ammo. Can't drive through NY, Mass, CT, etc if you are a nonresident unless your unloaded bang-bang is unloaded and in a hard locked case.

I would love to have a Henry AR-7 but with the purchase of my ham radio and accessories, will not allow that.

TG is correct on the one strap sling bag.  I got mine out, (13 pounds) and carried it around the neighborhood yesterday.  Only for about 75 to 90 minutes.  That was enough to convince me of 2 things.  1, it needs replaced with a 2 strap regular backpack and 2, better testing of things like this prior to planning  to rely on them.  I only packed and carried this one for about 5-10 minutes initially.

I have a couple low cost backpacks and one will be packed up over the next couple days and the sling bag will be more a traveling suitcase and gun show carry what I buy bag.  I will be looking for a new higher quality pack.

Problem is that it will be bigger and carry more stuff making it heavier.  But like everyone, gotta fill that space.  Hopefully I won't do that and just stick with necessaries.

Good things on bigger bag I am figuring for now is room for an extra pair of clean drawers and socks.  Even the same for the wife.  1 and 1 for each now.

And my Charter Arms (yeah I have had it a while) AR-7  will fit in it.  I might put another larger script jar of ammo for it.

As far as sidearm, if I have pants on its there.  But new pack will get a box of ammo and 2 more magazines.

JM, Life Straw? John, whats it like to live in well watered country? Is there shade too?

I'm just messing about, I envy you for being able to make use of such a neat product.. In my world you need to be able to carry water and lots of it. The two quart bottles in my kit are not nearly enough if I have to go off route and back up onto the mesa.

I always have my Danner Work boots on or in the truck but I could make that walk in a pair of Chucks if I needed too and I did forget to mention that the Beo-Feng lives in the truck so I'll likely have that on me too.

Nemo, I'm really glad that you took that bag out for a long walk! I have a Kelty Sling Bag for CCWin' and even with nothing more than a full frame pistol, extra mag and SureFire it will trash my lower back by the end of the day.. Who in their right mind issued Postal Carriers single sling bags?!

A really good way (as your finding) of paring down to the bare necessities is use.. load your bag and us it for its purpose.. a mile or two will let you know what you can live without

Great discussion so far but no one has hit the magical mystery idem yet! I know it had idem x in it that day because I used it.

So far they have held up well.  I guess I get heavy drugs or some such.

I don't know if you have seen my script bottle kit. I keep this one in the truck and if I get a 3-4 miles from where its parked its clipped on me somewhere.  It is wrapped in about 18 feet of paracord looping through about 3/4 inch split type key rings on top and bottom.  I created that wrap myself trying to find some way to do it and its an offshoot of the basic ball wrap for cord.

Many of the cord bracelet wraps have alot of stuff in them, which was the basis of packing this.  I prefer having a place to put stuff back into rather than just putting them in a pocket.

Go look.  Your thoughts appreciated.
